Ridge "R.J." Forrester, Jr. is the son of Ridge Forrester and Brooke Logan. Just after Ridge and Brooke's wedding in South America, Ridge was kidnapped and presumed dead after falling into a furnace. Ridge's half-brother, Nick Marone, comforted the grieving Brooke, and Nick and Brooke ended up making love. Ridge turned up alive, and Brooke didn't know if her baby was Ridge's or Nick's. Sally Spectra, Jackie Marone, and Deacon Sharpe all had their reasons for wanting Nick to be the father and separately tampered with the baby's paternity tests; the day he was born, a new test named Ridge his father. Instead of naming the boy Dominick Marone, Jr., as planned, Brooke named him Ridge, Jr. after Ridge.

Some time later, R.J. and his half-sister, Hope Logan, started a fire in the living room after unintentionally being left alone all night. This sparked a custody battle between Brooke and Ridge; eventually, R.J. and Hope were returned to Brooke's care. Years afterwards, the Forrester family worked overtime to make sure R.J. didn't find out that Brooke was missing at sea in a plane crash.

R.J. later attended boarding school in Europe, where Ridge visited him after dumping Brooke on their honeymoon. R.J. returned to Los Angeles with his father in 2013; while R.J. was excited by the idea of his parents once again remarrying, he also enjoyed spending time with his aunt, Katie Logan, and his infant cousin, Will Spencer. When Brooke told R.J. she wasn't reuniting with his father after all, R.J. took it in stride, as he did when Brooke reported that she and Bill Spencer, Jr. were getting married instead. R.J. thought it was cool when Bill gave him a sword necklace like all the Spencer men wore, unaware of the hostilities the trinket caused between his father and Bill. R.J. was kept in the dark once again when Ridge went missing in the Persian Gulf after falling out of a helicopter.

In 2016, R.J. came home from a boarding school in Ojai, California, encouraged to see his parents in an embrace. But when R.J. learned that Brooke was planning to marry Bill, R.J. confronted Bill and swore he wouldn't let the wedding happen. Confused by his siblings' support for the marriage, R.J. breathed a sigh of relief when Brooke delayed her wedding to Bill out of respect for R.J.'s feelings, later learning that, as Bill's wife, Brooke was to be gifted Bill's 12.5% share of Forrester, which would help Ridge wrest control of the family's design house, Forrester Creations, from R.J.'s grandfather Eric Forrester, who had married Quinn Fuller, a woman with a criminal past everyone despised. R.J. felt bad when Eric was hospitalized following a brain hemorrhage he sustained while raging at his family for boycotting his wedding to Quinn.

R.J. helped convince Ridge that he wanted Brooke more than Bill's stock and cheered when Bill left Brooke at the altar because Ridge had tried to sway Brooke's affections before the ceremony. R.J. rolled his eyes through a day of bonding Brooke set up with Bill, which included being instructed in the use of Bill's punching bag and sitting through a tour of Bill's hidden bunker filled with money and guns. Knowing Bill wanted to elope with Brooke, R.J. assisted Ridge in recreating a heart in the sand that had been a highlight of one of Ridge and Brooke's previous weddings; R.J. was overjoyed when the gesture resulted in his parents finally getting back together. R.J. also supported his cousin, Zende Forrester Dominguez, in his quest to win back his lost love, Nicole Avant, and attended their eventual wedding.

R.J. was charmed by potential new intern Coco Spectra and tried to assure his elders that Coco was not like her great-aunt, Sally Spectra, who had a history of stealing Forrester designs. After Ridge dismissed Coco, R.J. gave her a kiss goodbye, then escaped being hit by a forklift on the Forrester loading dock thanks to Coco. Grateful that his parents let Coco stay on, R.J. put her to work on the intern team and innocently showed her Ridge's confidential sketches. When Forrester designs showed up on Spectra's runway, R.J. believed Coco when she swore she was unaware her jewelry had been rigged with cameras by her sister, namesake designer Sally Spectra; R.J. stood by Coco after she was fired by Ridge and encouraged her to testify against Sally.

R.J. grudgingly accepted it when Brooke decided to marry Bill instead of Ridge, and later helped Coco babysit Nicole's biological child, Lizzy Forrester. R.J. comforted Coco when Nicole told her she wanted Lizzy back because she was unlikely to have more children.

R.J. wanted to impress Coco and let her drive Ridge's Camaro; R.J. ended up hospitalized with a concussion because Coco took selfies of them while driving and crashed into a tree. R.J. recovered and received a stern warning from Brooke, who warned him and Coco that they had been lucky to escape with their lives. Later, R.J. felt encouraged when Brooke suddenly left Bill; though he was sorry she was in pain, R.J. hoped it meant his parents would reunite. R.J. extolled Coco's virtues during the Forrester family's Thanksgiving tradition of saying something nice at the table.

R.J. finally got his wish when Ridge and Brooke announced they were indeed getting remarried; R.J happily brought Coco to his parents' ceremony. Afterwards, R.J. disappeared from the canvas -- it was said he was away at school, then that he was staying with half-brother Rick Forrester and his wife, Maya Avant, in Paris; whether or not R.J.'s relationship with Coco continued was not addressed.

In 2023, R.J. again returned home, this time after touring the world and becoming an animator and social media influencer. R.J. resisted Ridge's attempts to recruit him into Forrester Creations and expressed a desire to stay out of his family's dramas, yet R.J. had issues with his half-brother, Thomas Forrester, who had come between Ridge and Brooke and harassed Hope. R.J. confronted Thomas, and the two seemed to broker a peace between them. Later, R.J. was honored when his grandfather, Eric Forrester, wanted him to assist him in designing; R.J. found out that the family patriarch had become arthritic and had trouble holding a pen. R.J. helped Eric realize his design concepts but soon learned that Eric was also experiencing tremors.

R.J. crushed on a new intern, Luna Nozawa, who revealed that both her mother and her aunt, Li Finnegan, were demanding that Luna leave Forrester. R.J. helped Luna stand up to Li, and the two shared a kiss. R.J. remained torn about whether to tell Ridge about Eric's condition and was devastated when Eric secretly revealed he had received a terminal diagnosis. As R.J. continued to keep Eric's secret, R.J. had to endure cousin Zende's growing jealousy over R.J. getting to work with Eric. R.J. commiserated with Eric's ex-wife, Donna Logan, over Eric's worsening health; once Donna spilled the beans, which resulted in the whole family learning the truth, R.J. attended a party thrown by Eric, where everyone had to pretend they didn't know about Eric's diagnosis. After Eric collapsed and was hospitalized, R.J. kept vigil with his family at the hospital, eventually celebrating Eric's recovery, which was brought about by an experimental treatment devised by R.J.'s brother-in-law, John "Finn" Finnegan.

R.J. and Luna continued to grow closer, and R.J. rented a beach house from Bill's son, Wyatt Spencer, where R.J. and Luna made love for the first time. Upon hearing that Bill had known Luna's mother, Poppy Nozawa, about a year before Luna was born, R.J. inspired Luna to find out if Bill was her father. R.J was upset when Zende took an interest in Luna, yet remained mostly clueless when Luna began talking cryptically about how much she loved R.J. and didn't want to lose him.
