Long-running soaps depend on momentum, and on The Bold and the Beautiful, characters either grow or eventually stall. Once it reaches an organic ending, a character can start to feel finished rather than necessary. At the same time, other characters remain stuck in limbo, introduced with promise but never fully explored. The breakdown examines both sides of the equation. First, a look at five characters who have vastly overstayed their welcome, and then a deep dive into five characters who have so much more to offer than they are given the platform to showcase.

Characters whose stories feel finished

1) Sheila

How many times can Sheila lash out in a twisted or violent manner and try to convince everyone that she's a changed woman? She's been performing the same song and dance since 1990, and it's grown quite stale. Sheila can be a fascinating character, and she is flawed and layered, and in theory, that should be enough to want her on the canvas, but it's more complicated than that. If no one is willing to accept Sheila into their lives, the character will be forever stuck in one gear, with no forward momentum or change, leaving her stagnant.

2) Electra

There's nothing left for Electra to bring to the table. Unless something drastically changes and she enters into her villain era, the character is going to remain flat, at a dead end with no forward movement. Her entire existence is centered around Will, and if the pairing ever comes to an end, she'll be left to flounder in the abyss of forgotten Forresters. She's too one-dimensional to ever become a leading character on the show. If she isn't clinging to Will's side, she's portraying herself as the biggest victim in Los Angeles, so wrapping her story up wouldn't feel like a loss.

3) Dylan

The reveal of Dylan as the person responsible for running down Luna was one of the most lackluster moments of recent memory. Had she been hiding out from the police or done it with malicious intent, the story could've gone somewhere. Instead, she cried to Electra about her role in Luna's demise, and then she paraded herself in front of Steffy and Finn to give them a confession about her involvement. It was pointless, and for some reason, she's sticking around for a new storyline with Will and Electra at their beach house. She was never needed after the original beach house hostage situation with Luna, so further inclusion feels highly forced.

4) Daphne

Daphne served her purpose by creating tension between Hope and Carter when she first kissed him, while they were in charge of Forrester. However, everything since then has been largely unnecessary, and she brings nothing to the show. Watching Daphne perform karaoke at Il Giardino isn't entertaining and detracts from the actual important plots that could be explored. If she and Carter picked up the pace in the relationship, perhaps she would have a place, but since she refuses to let him fully into her life, it's time to head back to Europe. Great voice though!

5) Poppy

Poppy's connection to the canvas has always been a bit of a stretch because, beyond her sister Li and daughter Luna, there was nothing for her to do. Li wants nothing to do with her, and Luna was struck and killed by oncoming traffic (aka Dylan). Poppy hasn't been shown since the aftermath of Luna's death, and there's no reason for that to change. Bill is firmly back with Katie, and Finn is perfectly content living his life with Steffy. Surely there is a festival for Poppy to spend a few days away from Los Angeles and uncover a new hidden meaning for her life

Characters still waiting for their moment

1) Deke

Deke has tremendous potential to become a significant player in the fashion world. Forrester Creations recently decided to fire Hope's brother so Thomas could return to the design team. However, with Katie defecting to start her own fashion house, she will need a lead designer, and it feels like a perfect match. Katie gets the vibe of a young fashion upstart looking to make their mark in the industry, and Deke gets a prominent placement on the show, so his story can continue for many years.

2) Remy

Remy was finally showing flashes of true potential, and right at the height of what could've been a stellar story, he disappeared from the canvas. Deke asked for some space, but they've never followed up on Remy's side of the plot following that. He completely vanished, and that's a wasted opportunity for the soap to showcase its only same-sex couple. Touting something as groundbreaking and then injecting no life into it feels counterproductive. Remy deserves to be, at the very least, a major recurring player.

3) Donna

Seeing Donna take a larger role lately has been a refreshing change of pace for the character. However, it's not enough. Brooke and Katie get such a sizeable amount of screen time, and it seems only fair for the third Logan sister to step a bit further into the spotlight. Donna has been an excellent advocate for Eric, and she is poised to step in between her two sisters to help ease their new tension. The show is heading toward a fashion showdown between Forrester and Katie's new company, and throwing Donna directly into the two sides is a perfect direction for the character.

4) Taylor

It's easy to argue that Taylor gets a decent share of screen time, but she could be doing a lot more. Taylor should have the opportunity for a romance that doesn't involve existing solely as the other woman that Ridge waffles to when he's bored with Brooke. There's a lot of potential for her current story with Deacon and Sheila to be a major moment for the character. Taylor is no stranger to how violent Sheila can get, but the sparks between her and Deacon are getting too steamy to ignore. If the show could revolve around Luna for a year, there's no reason an established character like Taylor can't be given the proper leading story.

5) Thomas

Thomas is back in Los Angeles and returning to his role as the lead designer for the Hope for the Future line. Hope is vehemently opposed to the idea, and there's a strong possibility she's afraid of the implications this will have for her new marriage to Liam. She has shown undeniable attraction to Thomas in the past, and there's a good chance those feelings are still lingering. The only downside is that Thomas is only going to be popping into Forrester on a recurring basis, and he absolutely deserves to be a larger part of the upcoming umbrella story.
