On The Bold and the Beautiful, fans have watched Sean Kanan for years. Married to Sheila Carter, it’s never a dull moment for his character, Deacon Sharpe — and for viewers. While Deacon can light up the screen with his snappy lines and sometimes even his bad-boy inner Cobra Kai, behind the scenes, the actor has been suffering.

Sean Kanan shared with fans when he went to the doctor to deal with some pain management. He sat in a chair and explained to his Instagram followers in a video that he was at Dr. Tom Marinaro’s West Hollywood office, trying a NAD drip for his pain. The doctor explained that the NAD “stimulates and replenishes the mitochondria, which is a powerhouse of the cell.” When Kanan heard that he would feel like Superman when it was over, he said he was looking forward to going to the gym right after to test his stamina, which the doctor told him would be accelerated.
Kanan’s caption explained, “NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is essential for energy production, DNA repair, and metabolism. Many people are turning to NAD drips for increased energy, improved focus, and healthy aging!” He kept the camera rolling through the process, and when it was over, he said he felt “really good.”
Sean Kanan’s encouraging words
As promised, the actor went to the gym for a workout and recorded it for Instagram. In his own words, he explained the situation: “One year ago I underwent surgery for a full and massive tear of my supraspinatus on my left shoulder. I could barely move my arm and sometimes had to have my wife help me get dressed. It was humiliating and began permeating into other areas.”
Kanan added that his surgeon, @drnimamehran, doubted that the surgery was possible and that others warned against it as well as an operation could have made his shoulder worse, not better. Kanan, too, worried he would never get back his full mobility and strength. However, the surgery was a success.
However, Kanan “began a long and challenging recovery. punctuated by frustration and pain.” While showing himself at the gym doing several minutes of uninterrupted, controlled jump roping, Kanan added that at first after surgery, he could only do a few revolutions before his shoulder would give out. He acknowledged that he still wasn’t at 100% but he was progressing in the right direction. He shared his experience in case his words could help others.
This experience has taught me to stay in the present focusing on the process and not the result,” Kanan told his followers. He shared that he also stopped drinking four years ago, which too, was “another journey of challenge and immense reward.”
Kanan shared not only his own journey of struggles, but words of encouragement for anyone feelings like they were in “a swirling sea of darkness, unable to locate the shore” and reminded them that they are not alone. “Focus on the process not the results. It takes time. Concentrate on doing the next thing necessary. Do not view setbacks as failures but rather embrace them as challenges,” Kanan shared. You can read the actor's full message here:
