Fans of The Bold and the Beautiful often love to get a glimpse of the activities behind the scenes of their favorite daytime drama. So when news of an upcoming documentary broke, they were hoping the release date would be soon.

The Bold and the Beautiful documentary

As previously reported by Soap Central, award-winning filmmaker Matt Wolf is creating Soaps, a documentary about the making of The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as the Bell family who created the show.

In January, the director had posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), “My next film is about the world of soap operas!” Indeed it is. Along with looking at the life of Bradley Bell, the executive producer and head writer, the documentary will also focus on creators William Bell and Lee Phillip Bell (who brought B&B and its sister show, The Young and the Restless, to life). Wolf’s film will feature the famous Bell family and focus on how soaps are made.

Wolf recently told Deadline that soap episodes may be filmed in a day, but it’s a completely different world when editing a documentary. In fact, he confirmed that it could take about a year for the process.

“I’ve been behind the scenes at The Bold and the Beautiful for basically the past year. I just wrapped principal photography on the documentary,” Wolf explained. He added that although the film will look at the history of the Bell family, it was more so the kind of “kind of day-to-day follies of the making of the soap opera told through the family of collaborators that work at The Bold and the Beautiful.

“When I first visited the set of ‘The Bold and the Beautiful,’ I was blown away by the Herculean effort that goes into bringing these stories to life. It’s a fascinating and unexpected world that is ripe for a documentary,” Wolf shared previously with Variety. Last week, the show moved its production from the iconic building at Television City to a new location at Sunset Las Palmas Studios. After 38 years of being filmed in the same building as Y&R, the studio had been sold to a developer who plans to renovate. Wolf was there as the cast and crew said their goodbyes to the place they called home since the show’s first episode in 1987.

The Bold and the Beautiful can be watched weekdays on CBS or streamed on Paramount Plus.
