The Bold and the Beautiful Recap, May 26: Carter proposes as Daphne takes off

What happened on The Bold and the Beautiful

In his loft, Carter once again chastised himself for misunderstanding the conversation he eavesdropped on between Hope and Liam. Hope asked Carter not to be so down on himself. Carter admitted he would never have even imagined what the conversation was actually about. "A man his age? Dying?" Carter said, referring to Liam. Carter promised to be there for Hope and Beth as they dealt with Liam's illness.

Hope changed the subject to something less morbid and told Carter it felt right being there with him again. Carter apologized to Hope about making her feel used when she saw him kiss Daphne, but Hope wanted to put it all behind them. "Hope, I promise you that you will never feel that pain again. Never," Carter said.

Hope and Carter became flirty and playful with one another, with Hope telling Carter that she had missed their game nights. Carter asked Hope to close her eyes and returned with a glass of wine. When she opened her eyes, she saw a room full of lit candles.

Carter and Hope toasted to each other and their relationship. "To being better today than we were yesterday. To appreciating beauty in all aspects of life. To the gorgeous, talented, amazing woman of my dreams," Carter said before putting on some smooth jazz.

"You're the woman I've always dreamed about, someone I could love forever, someone I could grow old with," he gushed before shocking Hope by getting down on one knee. When he pulled a ring box out of his pocket and revealed a sparkling diamond, Hope was stunned.

"You're the only woman I want to spend the rest of my life with, so will you make me the happiest man in the world? Say yes. Say you'll marry me," Carter asked as Hope sat there speechless.

Daphne returned to the Forrester Creations design office, thinking about Carter and wondering if she should leave Los Angeles. When Steffy arrived, she saw that something was bothering Daphne. She was especially alarmed when she saw Daphne's suitcase.

Daphne explained that she was leaving because of Hope. "She's back at Forrester, and it was your decision. Why didn't you tell me? I feel blindsided by this, Steffy. Absolutely blindsided," Daphne said.

Steffy took the blame for Daphne not liking Hope as she tried to apologize to her friend. Steffy also knew that Daphne had developed strong feelings for Carter, also thanks to her, because she brought Daphne to L.A. to break up Carter and Hope.

"I didn't think I would feel like this. I actually thought we could build a life together. Now, he's gone back to Hope," Daphne wept. Steffy poured Daphne a drink and marveled that Hope and Carter were actually back together. Daphne told Steffy this was a surprise to her since Hope was leaning toward going back to Liam.

Steffy told Daphne that she had been mistaken. "It was all a big misunderstanding. At least that's what Carter thinks now," Daphne lamented. "I'm embarrassed. I put my feelings out there. This is why I don't allow myself to fall in love, and this is why I'm going back to Paris."

Steffy tried to talk Daphne out of leaving, but Daphne was determined. Still, she was confused about Hope. "Aren't you furious, though, seeing her here?" she asked Steffy. Just then, Deuce arrived in plain clothes and told Steffy he had a life and wasn't always in his captain's uniform. However, he was still there to fly Daphne back to Paris on the Forrester jet.

He checked if Daphne had her passport. "She forgets hers all the time, and it's a nightmare," Deuce said, harkening back to last year when Steffy lost her passport, leaving Brooke and Ridge to take off without her.

On the plane, Deuce served Daphne champagne as he became intoxicated by Daphne's magical scent. Once alone, Daphne looked out the window and remembered all of her office moments with Carter Walton.

At the cliff house, Liam looked to be in bad shape as he took his medication, but then a shirtless Finn walked in the back door and made Liam feel better. Liam joked about going on a run with Finn, knowing it wouldn't work out well. Suddenly, Liam felt dizzy and fell over. Finn caught him and sat Liam down on the couch.

Finn asked how often Liam has been having these spells. Liam admitted that they were becoming more frequent. "I think it's increasing in both frequency and severity. I think I'm getting closer," Liam told Finn.

After Finn brought Liam a glass of water, he asked him if he had decided what to do about treatment. Would he seek chemo and radiation? Liam made some more jokes about his predicament before confessing that it was all he had been thinking about. "On the surface, it's pretty straightforward. If chemo and radiation can extend my life even a little bit, it's a no-brainer. Time with my girls...but I've also seen those last days when my mom went through the exact same thing, and it was not pretty. It was horrible. And I don't know if I can do that to my daughters. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do," Liam said.

Liam thanked Finn in advance for what was to come. "I want to thank you for what you'll be doing for me when I'm not there to hold my daughters, to comfort them. Watch their graduation, walk them down the aisle at their wedding. I'm counting on you, and hopefully, Carter, to be those men. It's not that you're replacing me. You're picking up my torch," he said in tears.
