There's something to be said for tapping into long-ago soap history that makes daytime dramas different from other TV genres. Since we have known so many of these characters for decades, there is so much to mine. Days of our Lives did just that today with the heartwarming and heartfelt scenes between Carrie Brady and Marlena. We marveled at the grown woman Carrie is now as DAYS treated us to flashbacks of Carrie as a child and adolescent in scenes with Drake Hogestyn's John. The adult Carrie still has that same bond with Marlena as she spoke about Marlena being more of an influence on her life than her real mother, Anna DiMera. Remembering the impact John had on Roman's family and children is important, considering that Hogestyn really did play Roman for several years. He would have remained Roman had Wayne Northrop not chosen to return to the role. DAYS is honoring Hogestyn with John's most important incarnations, from The Pawn, to Roman, to John. In the end, he was always the same good, heroic man that Carrie thought of as her father while her real father was gone. More of John's honorary children and grandchildren are on their way to Salem, as they know it's time to say goodbye. Welcome Christie Clark's Carrie back first was a very special touch for a bittersweet week remembering the life and times of John Black.
