There was no acting on Days of our Lives this week, as the tears that flowed from our favorite Salemites were very real at John Black's funeral. The cast filmed these scenes just a week before Drake Hogestyn passed away last September, knowing their friend was dying. The powers that be at DAYS knew that Hogestyn would never be on set again and got his approval for John's final farewell before he passed. The story played out over the last few weeks, culminating in John's funeral, which was a celebration of his life and also Hogestyn's life, as the actor brought so much of himself to the character. From Eric Martsolf's Brady and Martha Madison's Belle to Peter Reckell's Bo and Deidre Hall's Marlena, we could hear, see, and feel the heartbreak. DAYS did a magnificent job of remembering history while also honoring it. The planting of a family garden of flowers, representing each of their children, was especially heartwrenching. We heard the voiceover from 1999 played over John and Marlena's now adult children holding a flower for their father and stepfather. When Bo arrived at the very end and told the story of how John fully came into their lives by saving his life, the tears flowed some more. John came in a hero and went out a hero, saving Bo once again like he did nearly 40 years ago. DAYS delivered some incredible soap opera over three unbelievable episodes, made all the more poignant because the feelings were real.
