What happened on Days of our Lives

At Bo’s rehabilitation center, Hope wheeled Bo out to the garden. There was a table decorated with a small bunch of flowers. “What is all this?” Hope asked. “I wanted to show you just how much I appreciate you. I mean, you were by my bedside for two years. This is the least I can do,” Bo said. “Still the same romantic you always were,” Hope said. Hope frowned, and Bo asked what was wrong. Hope attempted to avoid the question, but Bo pushed Hope to open up.
“It’s about John,” Hope whispered. “Is he in some kind of trouble?” Bo asked. After a moment, Hope said, “John is gone.” Bo shook his head in disbelief. Hope explained what had happened. “John is dead because of me?” Bo asked. “Nothing was gonna stop him from helping Steve and Shawn get that drug,” Hope stressed. Bo was furious that John and everyone had risked their lives to save him.
“Because we love you!” Hope said. “Why’d you wait so long to tell me?” Bo asked. With a shake of her head, Hope said she had not wanted to overwhelm Bo after he had woken up. “I can’t imagine what [Marlena] is going through,” Bo said. Hope said she had talked to Marlena. “She’s so strong, Bo. Stoic. I think she’s still in shock that it hasn’t quite hit her yet. The funeral is today,” Hope said. Bo struggled to his feet, eager to leave for the funeral. Hope reminded Bo that he was not well enough to travel, but Bo disagreed.
“I need to be there for John, for his family. Hope, I gotta be there,” Bo stressed. Bo and Hope returned inside, and Bo asked the doctor if he could be released to attend the funeral. “I’m very sorry about your loss, but I can’t give you my approval to leave the hospital,” the doctor said. Bo pointed out that the doctor had said that there did not seem to be anything wrong with him, but the doctor argued that Bo was still recovering from his coma.
After the doctor walked out, Bo pleaded with Hope to help him. Hope said she understood how Bo felt, but she refused to help. “For God’s sake, I just got you back. I can’t lose you again. We need to be smart about this. You need to be safe,” Hope said. Hope pleaded with Bo to listen to his doctor.
At John’s funeral, Tate talked to Chanel about what a great grandfather John had been. Chanel noted that Johnny had told her similar stories about John. “He was always trying to make his kids and grandkids laugh,” Chanel said. “Always,” Tate agreed. Chanel asked Tate about the baby. Tate mentioned the tour at the hospital, and how everything had felt more real to him and Sophia. “And how about the adoption? Did you find another family yet?” Chanel asked. “No, we haven’t. And we really need to find one, because we don’t have much time left,” Tate said.
Across the garden, Johnny informed Marlena that the livestream was set up and ready for the start of the service. “Everyone who cared about Grandpa John will have a chance to say goodbye to him,” Johnny said. “Thank you. How are you?” Marlena asked. Johnny scoffed, and he noted that he was more worried about Marlena.
“I want to know. I care so much about my children and my grandchildren,” Marlena said. Marlena noted that her family was the most important thing to her. “You’re pretty important to all of us too,” Johnny said. Marlena asked about Johnny’s strained relationship with EJ. Johnny winced, and he said he did not want to talk about his father. “Today is about a good man. An honorable man,” Johnny said.
Abe stared at the large photo of John and sighed. Steve patted Abe on the shoulder. “You and John, you had a whole lot of adventures at Black Patch,” Abe said. “We did. What about you and John on the force?” Steve countered. Abe chuckled. “When I think of all the crazy, crazy things we did. You know that there was, oh boy. There was just nobody I trusted more to have my back,” Abe said. Steve nodded in agreement. “When the pressure was on, there was no better partner than John Black,” Steve said.
Eric approached the podium, and he announced that the service was ready to begin. Attendees took their seats. Rachel teared up, and she told Brady that she did not want to say goodbye to her grandfather. Marlena took Rachel’s hand. “I don’t want to say goodbye to Grandpa John, either. But the thing is, if you think about him and you remember him and you hold him in your heart, you never really have to say goodbye,” Marlena counseled. Marlena handed Rachel John’s favorite baseball card, and she encouraged Rachel to use it to remind Rachel of when John had taken her to the Cubs game. Tears streamed down Rachel’s face as Brady whispered thank you to Marlena.
“Why don’t we head home. Because I think today might be a little hard to handle for you,” Brady said. Tate noted that he and Ari could take Rachel home so that Brady could stay for the service. Rachel agreed. Marlena smiled at Rachel. “We’ll share our favorite memories of our Grandpa John. He was my great-grandpa,” Ari said. Tate told Brady they would return after they dropped Rachel home. Brady kissed his daughter goodbye, and she put her hand on Brady’s heart. “You remember that Grandpa John is always going to be right here,” Rachel said.
As Marlena and Brady took their seats, Eric welcomed everyone. “We’re here to honor an incredible life and legacy of John Black,” Eric said. Eric lead a prayer. “This is sometimes called a home-going service. And I think it is. John is going to his eternal home, welcomed by Shawn and Caroline, and all those who loved him. Heaven is truly rejoicing at the return of one of its favorite sons,” Eric said. Tears spilled down the cheeks of the mourners. Kate quietly slipped into the chair next to Roman. Eric gave a reading from the Book of Ruth about courage and devotion.
Shawn slipped into a chair at the back as Eric continued. Belle turned and saw Shawn, and they nodded at one another. Brady went to the podium and lead the group in singing “Amazing Grace.” Next, Abe, Steve, and Shane took the podium. “Each of us represent a phase of John’s professional life,” Abe said. Abe explained their relationships with John. “Whether John was a cop, or a spy, or a private investigator, he always, always fought for justice. And well, even if it meant he was risking his own life,” Abe said.
“You’ll notice these many commendations that John received over the years. But they, they barely scratch the surface of the extraordinary work he’s done,” Shane said. “John served on so many missions. Countless missions. But the one that was most important to him, was protecting his family and friends. That’s why it’s so fitting that his final act of courage was to save the life of a man he considered a brother,“ Steve said.
“Loyalty was a big part of John’s character,” Abe said. Abe noted that despite the many years since he and John had worked for the Salem PD, John continued to call Abe his partner. “If you were in John’s circle, you never left,” Abe said. “And that’s how we will remember him. A loyal friend. And a true hero. We’re all so much better off for having known him. And the world is a safer place because of him,” Shane said. Marlena struggled to hold back her tears, but she smiled sadly.
As the men took their seats, Kayla and Roman went to the podium. “Roman, Bo, and I, along with our sister, Kimberly, have not only lost a close friend. We lost a man we call our brother,” Kayla said. Roman choked back tears. “As many of you know, and through no fault of his, John for many years, he believed he was me, Roman Brady. And when I came back home to reclaim my life, it was a difficult situation to say the least. But John handled that with such extraordinary grace. And looking back, I think so many times, did I really, really tell him that I love him so much for the phenomenal job that he did raising my children. And taking care of my family. Which became his family,” Roman said. Kayla agreed.
“When we learned that he was not our brother by blood, he became our brother by heart. And his heart could have filled up with bitterness and anger. It never did. It remained opening and welcoming and warm. John never hesitated to help someone in need. And like Steve mentioned earlier, he saved our brother’s life. Because of his selflessness and his bravery, Bo came out of his coma. And he came back to us,” Kayla said. Roman added that it was one of a long list of reasons that they were grateful to have had John in their lives.
Kayla talked about John’s relationships with Shawn and Caroline Brady. “When [John] found out that he wasn’t really a Brady, he was so afraid that he would lose that connection and closeness to them. And when our little firecracker of a mother caught wind of that, she got right in his face, looked him right in the eyes, and she said, once you are in my heart, you never get to leave. And she let him know that he had all the qualities of a son. And they stayed close, and they loved each other. And a testament to that love is that he named his firstborn son after our family. John Black was one of the best men I have ever known. And his legacy lives in all of us who loved him,” Kayla said. Roman hugged his sister.
Belle approached the podium, and she smiled at everyone. “There’s been a lot of talk about my dad being a hero. And he was. To me he was a superhero. When I was a kid, I always knew that my dad could keep my family and me safe from, like anything. And I’m sure every little girl feels that way but, I never outgrew it,” Belle said. Belle talked about a memory from her teenage years when John had flown to Paris to face Stefano, infuriating Marlena. Belle said that she had reminded Marlena that John would always come through for the family.
“He was also really powerful and really present in the quiet, small moments where I just needed a little advice. Or a shoulder to cry on. Or if I needed a laugh. Because I don’t think we talk enough about how funny my dad was,” Belle said. Belle announced that to honor her father, she intended to find time to laugh during the day. “Because I think that is how he would want it. And for the record, Daddy, you are still the man,” Belle said. Belle returned to her mother’s side, and Marlena put her arm around her.
Paul took the podium next. Paul mentioned that he had not met his father until adulthood, and he joked that it had meant that John had not been his first Little League coach, like he had been for Eric and Carrie. “I’m told he was awesome. Even though he would argue with the ump once in a while,” Paul said. A few people in the crowd chuckled at the memory. “Sports can bring people together. And baseball definitely did that for me and John. Our love of the game, it gave us a way to bond. Playing catch and hitting balls at the batting cage. Those are some of the memories that I’m going to cherish most about my dad,” Paul said. Paul talked about when he had hit John in the eye with a ball right before John’s wedding.
“He wouldn’t let me take the blame,” Paul said with a chuckle. Paul noted that John had been an excellent ball player, and he suggested that John had been a professional baseball player in a past life. Paul stopped to sniffle back tears, but then he continued to talk about John’s love of baseball.
“Dad himself was a terrific second baseman. And of course, why wouldn’t he be? He had all the qualities: agility, quick thinking, but most of all, he had the ability to pivot. No one had more grace than John when he’d pivot. I mean, no matter what the world threw at him, amnesia, paralysis, a long-lost son, he just rolled with the punches and kept going. You know, baseball doesn’t have a clock. Theoretically, a game can go on forever. But off the field? Off the field, sadly, time runs out,” Paul said. Paul added that he wished he could have spent more time with his father or that his father could have attended his wedding.
“But to all the times that I was lucky enough to have with my dad, he made me feel loved. He made me feel accepted. So every time I see a rainbow up high or a baseball in the sky, I’m gonna think of you, Dad. I love you, Dad. I can’t wait to play another game of baseball with you again,” Paul said as tears streamed down his face. Paul returned to his seat, and Andrew kissed his hand.
