In the square, Leo and Javi ate breakfast at the cafe. Leo noted that he had been happy to avoid Gabi and spend time alone with Javi at the Salem Inn. When Javi talked about his job search, Leo suggested that Javi pursue his dream. “Go back to being a firefighter paramedic,” Leo said. Javi said he was unsure. Leo reminded Javi that they could face any hardships together.

Leo said he had seen how effortless it had been for Javi to respond to Sarah’s allergic reaction. “You have a talent for saving people’s lives. That is not something you let go to waste,” Leo said. Javi agreed to think about it. With a grin, Javi suggested a return to their hotel room before checkout.

At the Hernandez house, a panicked Gabi asked JJ where Ari could have been all night. JJ attempted to keep a sleep-deprived Gabi calm. When JJ noted that he could not trace Ari’s phone without a warrant, Gabi sarcastically thanked JJ for his help, then she apologized.

“It’s just, it’s my daughter,” Gabi whispered. “I know,” JJ said. Gabi broke down in tears, and she thanked JJ for helping her look for Ari all night. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that. Especially since I know you and I haven’t been on the best of terms lately,” Gabi said. “That’s water under the bridge. Right now, Ari is the priority. And hey, we’re gonna find her,” JJ assured Gabi.

JJ made Gabi eat breakfast, and JJ suggested that Ari might have snuck out to meet a boy using a dating app. “My daughter is not the type to sneak out in the middle of the night and meet a boy. Even though she’s always been a little boy crazy,” Gabi said. Gabi shook her head no, and she said she refused to believe Ari was out with a boy.

At the Salem Inn, Ari and Doug III stared at each other in bed and smiled. “Last night was amazing. I’m so glad we ran into one another,” Ari said. “Me too. I don’t normally hit it off with total strangers, but you’re just so easy to talk to,” Doug said. With a groan, Ari noted that she needed to go home. Doug kissed Ari on the neck, and he asked her to stay.

After sex, Ari and Doug dressed, and she asked him if he wanted to hang out again. Doug admitted that he did not have the money to meet up at the Salem Inn again. Ari offered to pay, but Doug refused. When Ari suggested that they meet up at Doug’s place, Doug explained that he rented a room from his boss at the Brady Pub. Ari noted that her family loved the restaurant, and Doug pointed out that was another reason why meeting up at his place was a bad idea. Ari agreed. “Honestly, I’m just glad it’s a logistical problem and not a you have a secret girlfriend problem,” Ari said. “Right. Trust me, I do not have a girlfriend,” Doug said.

In the hallway of the Salem Inn, Javi and Leo talked about Gabi and whether she would have noticed they had not gone home. “I’m sure she’s too busy fawning over her newly arrived mija,” Leo said. Javi agreed. As Leo and Javi continued to walk, they did not see Ari exiting a room with Doug. Ari told Doug that she hoped they could meet again. “I definitely want to make this happen again,” Doug said. Doug kissed Ari.

Fully recovered from the flu, Tate was surprised to find that the penthouse was empty. “Where’d everybody go?” Tate wondered aloud. Tate called Brady, and Brady told him what had happened with John. Tate rushed over to the hospital.

Johnny and Chanel curled up on the couch of their new apartment together. With a chuckle, Johnny said he had enjoyed christening their apartment. With a sigh, Chanel marveled aloud that Paulina had sold them the apartment for a dollar. “Now all we have to do is focus on filling it up,” Chanel said. Johnny stammered about waiting, and Chanel clarified that she meant furniture, not children.

“Don’t worry, okay? I understand that you need time,” Chanel said. Chanel told Johnny that he needed to focus on his new job. As Johnny picked up his phone to look for his HR paperwork, he saw a large number of messages from his family. Johnny called Sami, and she updated him on John’s condition. Johnny told Chanel what had happened and that Sami and Syndney had been unable to get a flight home because of a volcanic eruption in Italy.

“[John] must be in serious condition if they were both trying to rush back home,” Chanel said. “It doesn’t look good,” Johnny said. Chanel reminded Johnny that John was the toughest person they knew, and he would pull through this injury. “Yeah. And that’s what I thought about Nonno. But then I learned that even the strongest men can’t live forever,” Johnny said.

As Johnny and Chanel headed for the hospital, they ran into Tate in the town square. “I just came from [the hospital], and it doesn’t look good,” Tate said. Tate told them that John was bandaged up and unresponsive. “I hope that he heard me,” Tate stammered. “I’m sure that he did,” Chanel said. Fighting back tears, Tate talked about all the things he had wanted to discuss with John once he was home from Estonia. Chanel put her hand on Tate’s shoulder to comfort him, and she reassured him that John would pull through.

As Doug and Ari exited the hotel, she spotted Tate and JJ across the square. “My cousin and my uncle are over there. They cannot see us together,” Ari said. Doug saw Tate, and he agreed. “I’m going to go out that way. Call me,” Doug said as he snuck out of the back of the square. Ari kept hidden behind a bush as she saw Johnny, Tate, and Chanel talk.

“We’re here for you, Tate,” Johnny said. Chanel asked Tate if he wanted to go with them back to the hospital, but Tate said he needed to meet up with Sophia and a lawyer about the adoption. “Did you find another family?” Chanel asked. “No, not yet, but we’re hoping the lawyer will help us go through an agency,” Tate said. Chanel wished Tate luck. “I hope everything works out for you guys,” Johnny said as he averted his eyes. “I hope everything works out for you guys, too,” Tate said.

Melinda met with Sophia in the Brady Pub to discuss the adoption of her baby. Sophia told Melinda about her previous failed attempts and her desire to circumvent her mother’s wishes. Melinda asked if the father agreed to the adoption, and Sophia said yes. “But your mother, not so much,” Melinda said. “Does it matter what she thinks? I mean, I just turned 18, so legally, right, I’m allowed to make this decision without her, right?” Sophia said. Melinda noted it would be better if Sophia’s mother agreed to the adoption.

“She’s not going to be a problem. I promise,” Sophia said. Amy walked in, and she asked Sophia why she was not in school. Sophia introduced Amy to Melinda. “What on earth are you doing here with this woman?” Amy asked. When Sophia said she wanted to hire Melinda to handle the adoption of her baby, Amy said no. Melinda excused herself to leave, but Sophia begged for her help.

“Sophia, I know how messy these things can get, and it’s not going to help anyone right now for me to be in the middle of it,” Melinda said. Sophia asked Melinda to give her a minute to talk to her mother, and Melinda agreed to wait. “Mom, I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you that I decided to move ahead with the adoption. I was afraid of how you might react,” Sophia said. “With good reason,” Amy grumbled. Sophia said that she understood Amy’s objections were rooted in a place of love, but that she needed to make her own life choices.

“I have to do what I think is best for me and for my baby,” Sophia said. “And what you think is best is for you to give your child away to complete strangers?” Amy countered. Sophia corrected Amy, and she noted that she wanted her child to grow up with loving parents who could give her a better life than she and Tate could give them. “Mom, for a while, you seemed to understand that,” Sophia said. Amy noted that the failed adoption had been a sign. Sophia reminded Amy that she was 18, and she could legally make the decision without Amy’s approval.

“Well, I am still your mother. And I refuse to let this adoption happen,” Amy said. Melinda interjected that Sophia was right. “You have no say in the matter, Mrs. Choi. And if you want my advice, you should just accept that. Otherwise, you will not only lose your grandchild but you will lose your daughter as well,” Melinda advised. “How dare you tell me how to handle my family. Who do you think you are?” Amy countered. Melinda explained that she understood both sides of the argument because she had been a pregnant teen whose mother had raised her child.

“That must have been really hard for you,” Sophia said. “Giving up Haley was one of the hardest things that I have ever had to do and the most painful,” Melinda said. Amy smuggly noted, “So you wish you had kept the baby.” Melinda explained that she had told her daughter the truth, but Haley had died not long after.

“There is not a day that goes by that I don’t wish that I had more time with her. Time to be a mother to my precious daughter. But I also know that giving up Haley was the right thing to do. I was 17. I wasn’t ready to be a mother. I was too selfish. I was too much of a mess. Hell, I still am. But my parents did a great job with Haley,” Melinda said. Melinda reminded Amy that the law was on Sophia’s side. “And I meant what I said before, Mrs. Choi. Don’t lose your daughter over this. I miss my own daughter every single day, every single second of every single day. Don’t take what you have for granted,” Melinda said.

Amy thanked Melinda for sharing her story and her advice. As Amy started to tell Sophia that she wanted what was best for her, Amy’s phone beeped with a message from work. “I know this is terrible timing, but please, we will finish this tonight at home,” Amy said. Sophia agreed to talk to her mother later that night, and they hugged goodbye. After Amy left, Sophia thanked Melinda for her help. “I’ve been where you are, so I know what you’re going through, and I empathize,” Melinda said. Sophia was asking Melinda to be her lawyer when Tate entered the pub.

“No, absolutely not,” Tate said. “Ms. Trask has been nothing but helpful so far. What’s the problem?” Sophia asked. Tate explained that Melinda had been part of the kidnapping of Holly’s brother. “It caused a lot of pain and heartache for Holly’s family and mine,” Tate said. “Look, I know I got overly involved with my client, who was also my friend, and I did some things that I shouldn’t have, but obviously, I regret that. However, I think this just demonstrates the lengths I would go to for my clients,” Melinda said. “No matter how many lives you have to destroy in the process,” Tate argued. Melinda sighed.

“Sophia, I see so much of myself in you. And as I said, I know what you are going through. So, if you and your mom can agree on what you want to do, give me a call,” Melinda said as she handed her business card to Sophia. Melinda walked out.

Ari sat at the cafe in the square and looked through all the messages from Gabi on her phone. “Ari!” Gabi yelled as she ran over to her daughter and hugged her. “I’m fine, Mom,” Ari said. Worried, Gabi demanded to know where Ari had been. JJ cautioned Gabi to let Ari speak, but Gabi was so upset she kept talking. Gabi asked Ari how someone who was so attached to their phone had ignored 47 messages from her. “Would you calm down! I was at Cora’s last night, okay?” Ari said. “Cora who?” Gabi asked. Ari noted that Cora was an old friend from soccer. Gabi said she did not remember Cora.

“Yeah, well, you probably weren’t paying that much attention,” Ari said. “Oh no. You don’t get to cop an attitude, not after the stunt that you pulled. And don’t try and tell me that you get away with this kind of stuff with your dads, because I know for a fact that Will and Sonny would never let you spend the night somewhere without letting them know first,” Gabi argued. Ari reminded her mother that she was 18, and she said Gabi was overreacting.

“What you did last night was completely unacceptable,” Gabi yelled. As Gabi and Ari both made a plea to JJ to intervene, he noted that the fight was between them. “As long as you live under my roof, you’re going to follow my rules,” Gabi said as Javi walked over and said hello. Ari called her mother a psycho. Javi apologized to Ari for having missed her birthday, and he offered to take her to dinner.

“I know you had a good reason to miss [my party],” Ari said as she stared pointedly at Gabi. Gabi told Javi she had called him. “I wanted to apologize,” Gabi said. “I don’t want to hear it, because I just wanted to end this cycle of abuse,” Javi said. When Gabi made a confused face, Javi explained that Gabi repeatedly abused him at work, apologized, and then did it all over again.

“I can’t take it anymore. Especially not from someone that claims they care about me, not from family,” Javi said. Gabi nodded yes. “I have been awful, and I’m really sorry,” Gabi said. Gabi admitted that she had overreacted when she had believed that Javi had left Ari at the airport. Javi agreed.

“But honestly, Gabriela, I love you. I just, we both know that our relationship is not gonna survive me working for you,” Javi said. “And what about living together. I noticed that you and Leo didn’t come home last night,” Gabi said. Javi said he and Leo would come home and reevaluate the situation. “So then, we’re okay?” Gabi asked. “We’re getting there,” Javi said. Javi left, and JJ stepped aside to take a call from work.

“Look, I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you where I was last night. I forgot. It was stupid. It won’t happen again, okay?” Ari said. “Were you really at a friend’s house?” Gabi asked. Ari lied and said yes. “Even if you really had spent the night with a boy?” Gabi pressed. Ari’s eyes went wide. “No, I wasn’t with a boy, Mom!” Ari said defensively. Gabi asked Ari why she had turned off her phone. Ari stammered that her phone had died, but Gabi did not believe her. “Why are you so suspicious of me all of a sudden? You didn’t use to be like this,” Ari yelped. “Well, neither did you,” Gabi countered. Gabi told Ari that she knew she was lying.

Before Gabi could say anything else, JJ returned to tell Ari about John. “I need to go see him,” Ari said. “I’ll go with you,” Gabi offered. Gabi thanked JJ for his help. “Anytime. Please know I’ll be praying for your great-grandpa,” JJ said.

At the Hernandez house, Doug stopped by to talk to Leo to ask for help locating Julie’s necklace. “Why not just ask Melinda?” Leo said. Doug explained that Melinda had refused to answer his calls. Leo promised to help. “At this point, I consider you a friend,” Leo said. As Doug walked out, he passed Javi on the way in. “I have made a major decision,” Javi announced. “What’s that?” Leo asked. Javi said he planned to apply to the Salem Fire Department.

After the hospital visit, Johnny and Chanel returned home. “I barely recognized him. I mean, to see my Grandpa John, my god, just to see him hooked up to all those machines,” Johnny said. “He just needs time to heal,” Chanel said. With a nod yes, Johnny agreed that he needed to be more positive, like his grandfather.

“[John] is always so optimistic and upbeat, even in the worst situations. That’s part of the reason that I wanted to use John as the middle name for our child when we were still planning on adopting,” Johnny said. Chanel agreed that when they were ready to start a family, they could still give their child John’s name. “A man loved by everyone, and also after you, a man that I love more than anyone,” Chanel said.

Chanel asked Johnny if he was sure that he wanted to work with Xander. “I mean, what if he is the one that attacked Philip?” Chanel said. Johnny noted that the police had released Xander. “Plus I need an income. If we have kids, I don’t want to be relying on DiMera money to support my family,” Johnny said. “Kids, like plural?” Chanel asked. Johnny smiled, and he thanked Chanel for supporting him.
