Days of our Lives is starting to bring their veteran characters to the forefront again, so it was a pleasure to see one of the longest-running stars make an appearance this week. James Reynolds' Abe Carver was certainly a sight for sore eyes as he reminded us why Abe has been such a beloved character for decades, as well as why he earned Soap Central's performer of the week honors.

Days of our Lives gets to the heart of the matter

Reynolds, who first started playing Abe in 1981, had been MIA of late while his wife, Paulina, dealt with all of Chanel's many problems. On Thursday, Reynolds suddenly appeared on a brand-new set to introduce Abe and Paulina's (Jackee Harry) new apartment, as well as be a sounding board for Chanel (Raven Bowens).

Abe was only in a few brief scenes, but sometimes the simplest of scenes can offer a performance so earnest and subtle that you forget a performer is acting, which is how it should be. Reynolds slipped right back into Abe's shoes as if he were another part of him, which he just might be after 43 years of bringing this Salem hero to life.

Abe didn't just listen to Chanel, but he also related to her and told his own painful story to show his empathy for his stepdaughter losing her dream of becoming a mother.

As Abe told Chanel about the heartache he felt when he was forced to give Isaac/Zack back to Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) after raising him for two years, we were brought right back to that moment thanks to the longevity of soaps and Reynolds' engrossing performance.

You could see that Abe was right back there as well, dealing with the aftermath as he watched his wife spin out of control. There was pain in Reynolds' voice and on his face, but there was also a quiet understanding of what Chanel was going through.

Reynolds did what he has been doing for decades. He made us feel like we were right in the room with Abe and Chanel. He brought us back in time while also being completely present, which is not something every actor can do. Bravo to James Reynolds for reminding us why every time we see him, it's like seeing an old friend.
