At the paper, Leo talked to Chad about writing a book about Johnny’s court case. “Kristen’s confession. In my opinion, it was all too convenient,” Leo said. “You don’t think she did it?” Chad asked. Leo argued that he did not buy that Kristen came forward out of remorse. “So why would she confess?” Chad asked.

In the DiMera living room, Gwen told EJ that she was amazed that Kristen had confessed to the shooting. “I suppose she just didn’t want her nephew to take the fall for something she did,” EJ said. Gwen noted that Kristen had confessed in vain because Johnny’s verdict had been not guilty. “And now she’s going to spend decades away from her daughter. Poor Rachel,” Gwen said.

At the penthouse, Brady was reading a news story about Kristen when Tate returned home from a run. Tate asked about Rachel. “Hoping time with [Rachel’s] grandmother will help her open up her feelings a little bit,” Brady said. Tate lamented that he had been unable to cheer up his sister. Concerned, Tate asked Brady if he should stay at home, but Brady encouraged Tate to move into the dorms as planned.

Tate admitted to Brady that he was worried about working with Sophia. “That’s interesting, son. Considering I know things have been tense with you ever since Sophia gave up the baby,” Brady said. Tate noted that after his conversation with Sophia, he believed the tensions were resolved.

Holly entered the pub, and she told Sophia that she did not like that she was working at the pub to get closer to Tate. Sophia played innocent. “If you think you’re gonna steal my boyfriend, then you better think again,” Holly growled. Sophia countered that after her ordeal with her pregnancy, she was not concerned with stealing boyfriends. Holly softened, and she noted that she did not want to upset Sophia after all she had been through.

“It’s just that you’ve actively tried and succeeded in coming between me and Tate before. So I just want to make it very clear I’m not letting that happen again,” Holly said. Sophia called Holly insecure. Tate walked in. “What are you doing here?” Tate asked Holly. Holly said she had wanted to wish Tate luck on his first day.

“I was hoping to be your first customer,” Holly said. Holly kissed Tate in front of Sophia, and she opened her eyes to stare at her rival. When Tate later delivered Holly’s order, he spent time flirting with her. Sophia interrupted to ask Tate for help bussing tables. “Back to work,” Tate said. As Tate walked away, Sophia and Holly stared daggers at one another. Near the end of their shift, Sophia gently wiped pie filling off of Tate’s face. Holly interrupted to ask Tate and Sophia about classes at Salem U.

Outside the pub, Leo ran into Gwen. The two bickered. “I’m actually quite grateful to Dimitri. Had he not written me that Dear John letter that read like a mind-numbingly bad fortune cookie on repeat, I never would have met the man that I was meant to be with. And who knows? The same could be true for you, too,” Leo said.

With narrowed eyes, Gwen asked Leo if he was suggesting that she should be thankful that Dimitri had cheated on her with Leo. “You and my husband are both backstabbing lowlifes. And I hope you both rot in hell!” Gwen said. Leo admitted that his statement had been self-serving, but he added that he genuinely hoped that Gwen could move on and be happy. Gwen said she was happy with her money.

Leo told Gwen that he knew she was miserable, and he knew that she was a great person. “I just wish that we could be friends again!” Leo said. “Well I don’t. Because anyone who could do what you did to me was never my friend to begin with,” Gwen countered. When Leo called his ex-friend, Gwennie, she lashed out at him to get her point across. Curious, Leo asked Gwen why she had stayed in Salem. “You’ll find out soon enough. Enjoy your happiness while it lasts,” Gwen said.

After Gwen stomped off, Leo went into the pub with Tesoro. Tate, Holly, and Sophia were talking about college when Leo interrupted. As Holly cooed over the baby, Sophia turned her back to them. Tate directed Leo to a table, and he quietly encouraged Sophia to take a break. “It’s just hard for me to be around babies right now,” Sophia said. Sophia teared up, and Tate hugged her.

Brady went to Black Patch, and he asked Steve about the adoption investigation. “Without a court order, [the adoption records] are sealed,” Steve said. Steve asked Brady if he had any more information about the birth. “I literally have no information. I didn’t even know the names of the adoptive parents,” Brady admitted. Brady told Steve that he had a picture of the parents, and Steve offered to do a reverse image search on the photo. Steve encouraged Brady to ask Sophia about a copy of the adoption papers, but Brady said he did not want Tate and Sophia to know that he was investigating the baby.

“However, there might be another way to get a copy of those papers,” Brady said. Brady and Steve looked up the adoption lawyer, and Brady called her. Brady left a voicemail asking for information on Sophia’s adoption. When the lawyer did not call back, Brady went to her office. Brady asked about the adoption, but the lawyer had not heard of Tate Black.

At the hospital, Cat asked Kayla if she could use her as a reference for a job in the cafeteria. Kayla suggested that Cat look for a job outside the hospital that better suited her talents. Cat admitted that he liked working at the hospital and that she needed the benefits for her sister. With a nod, Kayla promised to help Cat.

As Cat started to walk away, she noticed EJ approach Kayla. Cat stopped by the nurses’ station to eavesdrop. EJ asked about his new office, and Kayla said it would be ready the next day. After EJ walked away, Cat followed him down the hallway. Chad arrived, and he asked Kayla to sign a form for Charlotte’s school. Chad thanked Kayla for her help with his strep infection.

“I’m sure it was miserable for you and Cat [to be quarantined],” Kayla said. Chad thought about when Cat had kissed him in a feverish haze, and he smiled. “Yeah, it was miserable,” Chad said. Chad recapped his quarantine with Kayla, but he did not mention the kiss. “Good thing I was there to help, I guess,” Chad said. “It was very kind of you,” Kayla said.

Kayla argued that EJ was to blame for Chad’s infection because he had caught strep while he had been stuck in the elevator with Cat. Chad said he had already yelled at EJ about the incident. Kayla said she did not know why EJ wanted to run a hospital when he had no affinity for patient care. Kayla started to say that she believed that EJ had interests other than Versavix, and Chad agreed. “I can nose around for you. But you and I both know that EJ plays his cards close to the vest,” Chad said.

Cat caught up with EJ in the town square, and she admitted that she had overheard him talking to Kayla. “Now that you officially have an office, do you by chance need an administrative assistant?” Cat asked. Cat explained that Marlena was taking a leave of absence. After a moment, EJ noted that his assistant Rita dealt with bigger issues, and that he might be in need of someone to deal with his calendar and office work.

“I don’t think my brother Chad would approve,” EJ said. Cat started to apologize for impersonating Abigail, but EJ said that was not what he meant. EJ reminded Cat that Chad had felt the need to protect her from him when he had bid on a date with Cat. “Don’t worry about Chad. I’m sure I can get him to come around. It’s not like we’re dating,” Cat said. Cat stressed that she needed a job to support her siblings. EJ asked for a resume, and Cat handed hers to him. EJ asked about the gap. Cat reminded EJ of her car accident.

“Could you please just give me a chance?” Cat asked. EJ hired Cat. After EJ walked away, Cat called Rafe. “Not only did I get a job at the hospital, but starting tomorrow, I am gonna be working directly for EJ DiMera,” Cat said. As Cat chatted about her new job, Chad walked up behind her. “What job?” Chad asked. Cat pretended that she was ending a call with her mother. Cat told Chad that she had accepted a job as EJ’s assistant. “No, you can’t do that,” Chad said. Chad warned Cat that EJ had a way of hurting people. “I can take care of myself,” Cat stressed.

In the DiMera mansion living room, Gwen asked EJ about work. EJ mentioned that he had hired Cat. Surprised, Gwen noted that Cat was her new and maybe only friend in town.

At the hospital, Steve asked Kayla about Sophia. “Brady has a suspicion that Sophia is not being totally up front with Tate about the adoption,” Steve said. Steve asked Kayla if there was anything she could do to help. After Kayla looked at Sophia’s records, Kayla said, “I can’t tell you what to do, but you’ve always been a man with very good instincts.”
