At the penthouse, Brady informed Kristen that Chanel was the new prime suspect in EJ’s shooting. “Chanel let her husband take the fall for a crime she committed,” Brady said. Elated, Kristen argued that if Chanel were the shooter, Rachel would not have to testify against Johnny. Brady cautioned Kristen to remember that it was only a possibility.

“I was convinced my nephew was guilty. I’d hoped I was wrong,” Kristen said. “If Chanel did this, [Johnny’s] world is going to be turned upside down,” Brady said. Kristen argued that Chanel deserved to be punished if she had been the shooter. When Brady countered that Chanel’s motive to protect Johnny made the situation less cut and dried, Kristen shrugged.

“Don’t even pretend like you wouldn’t do the same thing in her shoes,” Brady said. “Defend someone I love? Maybe even do away with the person who hurt them?” Kristen asked. Kristen reminded Brady that she had done that before, but she would never have let the man she loved take the fall. Brady noted they would hope for the best for Rachel. Kristen told Brady about her conversation with EJ when he had asked Kristen to coach Rachel’s testimony in court. Brady was furious, but Kristen begged him not to argue with EJ.

Johnny called into work to take a day off for a “family emergency.” Chanel marveled that Johnny could behave as if everything was normal. “It won’t be long before all of Salem thinks that either I shot your father or you did,” Chanel said. “Who cares what people think?” Johnny said. Johnny and Chanel told one another that they believed they were innocent.

“All we have to do is prove that. Which means that we need to figure out who shot my dad,” Johnny said. Chanel argued that they should leave the investigation up to the police, but Johnny countered that the police were not interested in new suspects. Chanel swore to Johnny that she did not remember having said the things in the video of her with EJ.

“It doesn’t matter what you said. It matters what you did,” Johnny said. “And what I did was walk out of that house and drive home,” Chanel said. Johnny told Chanel that he knew she had not shot his father because she was not capable. “And if you did something like that, you wouldn’t let me take the fall for it,” Johnny added. Chanel thanked Johnny for believing in her, and he thanked her for the same.

Johnny and Chanel reviewed possible suspects. As Johnny reached for a pad of paper to write down notes, he saw a letter that confirmed that Chanel had used her bakery as collateral for Johnny’s bail. “Why would you do this?” Johnny asked. Chanel said she had wanted to show Johnny that she supported him. “I would put everything on the line for you,” Chanel said. “I wish I were more deserving of your love and support,” Johnny whispered. Johnny lamented that he had not told Chanel the truth from the start about his confrontation with EJ.

Tate waited at the lake for Holly and Ari to arrive, but they did not show. Back in Salem, Doug’s masked loan shark held Holly and Ari at gunpoint in a storeroom. “We just need a mutual friend to cough up the money he owes us. As soon as he does that, you’re free to go home,” the man said. “But what if this mutual friend doesn’t have the money?” Holly asked. The man told the women that he knew they had rich families and he would ransom them if he did not get the money. Ari offered to call her mother and work out a deal.

“This can all just be over. We just need to call our families,” Holly said. “No. That can get messy. I’ll just deal with your little friend,” the man said. After the man left, Holly blamed herself for their situation. Holly and Ari confirmed that they both had been involved with Doug. Holly explained her situation with Doug to ease Ari’s mind. “I can’t help but think that he was only with me because he couldn’t be with you,” Ari said. “You don’t know that,” Holly stressed.

At the Salem Inn, Doug posed as room service. When no one answered the knock on Gwen’s door, Doug started to use his key to open the door. “What do you think you’re doing?” Gwen asked as she walked up behind Doug. Doug explained that he was delivering room service. As Gwen mentioned that she had ordered breakfast and eaten it already, Doug looked at Alice’s necklace on Gwen’s neck. “I think the kitchen must have thought it [had not gone out] out already. Sorry to bother you,” Doug said. Doug waited for Gwen to leave, but when she did, she still had the necklace on.

As Doug walked home to the pub, he saw the loan shark out front. Doug grabbed the man by the collar and screamed, “Ari and Holly have nothing to do with my debt! You need to let them go right now!” The man warned Doug to back off, and Doug released him. The loan shark warned Doug to pay him cash, or the women would suffer. The man gave Doug until sunrise to get the money.

When Tate returned home from the lake, Brady asked why he was back early. “Holly never showed up,” Tate said. Tate noted that Holly had not called or texted him. “I guess it’s possible she had a change of heart. Decided she wasn’t ready to get back together,” Tate said. Brady argued Holly would not ghost Tate, and Tate agreed. Tate decided to talk to Doug.

At the pub, Doug was staring at the cash register when Tate called out to him. Tate explained to Doug that Holly had not shown up at the lake or returned his calls. “Do you know anything about that?” Tate asked. “No. Why would I?” Doug said. Tate noted that Doug and Holly were friends. “I swear I have no idea where she is,” Doug said.

EJ and Belle spent the morning in EJ’s bed at the mansion. After EJ cooked breakfast for Belle, they talked about being on opposing sides in Johnny’s case. “With the same goal in mind, to prove my son’s innocence,” EJ said. Belle noted that although she believed Johnny was innocent, she needed to prosecute the case. “I’m confident you’ll be fair and just,” EJ said. Belle argued that the public might see any acquittal as rigged because Johnny was her nephew. EJ noted that with the reasonable doubt introduced by Chanel’s video, Belle could drop the charges against Johnny. Belle was insulted.

“Johnny has to be exonerated in a court of law or this accusation’s gonna be hanging over his head for the rest of his life,” Belle argued. Belle accused EJ of attempting to manipulate her into doing his bidding. “That’s not true!” EJ said. “Now I’m starting to think that you just seduced me so that I would drop the charges against your precious son,” Belle said. EJ laughed, and Belle stormed out.

Gwen went to the DiMera mansion and visited Kristen. After Gwen told Kristen about her inheritance, Kristen asked why Gwen was back in town. Gwen said she was there to see friends and family. “Your family hates you. And I am probably your only friend unless you patched things up with Leo,” Kristen said. Gwen refused to forgive Leo. Kristen was surprised that Dimitri had not visited Gwen after his release from prison. Gwen shrugged dismissively. Gwen announced that she was moving into the mansion.
