Stephanie visited Alex at work, but he said he could not go out to dinner because Xander and Philip were both absent. “Just so you know, we are going to make up for lost time tonight,” Alex said. Alex kissed Stephanie, and he teased that the kiss was a preview of their evening. “All it did was make me want more. Right now,” Stephanie said. Alex kissed Stephanie, and he pushed her onto his desk.

In the Kiriakis living room, Maggie and Sarah talked about John’s memorial service. “My heart is breaking for Marlena and the family. To finally get John back home only to lose him like that. He died a hero. Which is fitting, because he also lived like a hero,” Maggie said. “They sure don’t make them like they used to,” Sarah said. Maggie reminded Sarah that John was the only person to have believed that Brady had not been to blame for Sarah’s car accident.

“Though no one’s intuition led them to believe that Xander’s witch of a mother is the one that ran me over,” Sarah said. Sarah rattled off the list of crimes that Fiona had committed against her. “Obviously, we know where Xander gets his violent impulses from,” Sarah muttered. Sarah said that she felt like a fool for having believed that Xander had changed his violent ways.

“God help me, Mom. I do love him. I really should have realized a long time ago that love isn’t enough, and after what he almost did to Brady,” Sarah said. “You can’t trust him,” Maggie said. With a grunt, Sarah noted that she had felt guilty about keeping the secret from Xander, but that her instincts about his reaction had been correct.

“At least your conscience can rest now knowing you did the right thing,” Maggie said. After a moment, Sarah told Maggie what Xander had said about Sarah causing him to bond with Philip. “[Xander said] he wouldn’t have gotten so angry when he found out the truth,” Sarah said. Maggie argued that it sounded like Xander was blaming Sarah for something he had done.

“You’re right. See how I just get sucked into his deranged logic?” Sarah said. When Sarah mentioned Xander’s demands to see Victoria, Maggie asked her if she was afraid that Xander would hurt Victoria. “No. I’m just, I’m more afraid of myself, that I can’t resist that pull he has over me,” Sarah said. Sarah argued that the best course of action would be for her and Victoria to leave Salem. Maggie reminded Sarah that Xander had parental rights to see his daughter.

“If you try and skip town with her, he can try and make a case against you, especially because, well, it wouldn’t be your first time of running off with a child,” Maggie said. Maggie counseled Sarah to be careful. “Xander will most likely go to prison. But still, if a custody case is open, the judge would be looking at the both of you. And in the end, they could decide that neither one of you would be fit parents,” Maggie argued. Sarah disagreed.

“Yes, your worries are understandable. I’m scared to death that Xander’s going to steal my granddaughter. But you said he would not hurt her. So then why, why would you uproot Victoria and take her away from her family and her home?” Maggie asked. “You’re right. I can’t run away from my problems,” Sarah admitted. Sarah agreed to confront Xander.

In the town square, Xander smiled as he looked at a dress he had bought for Victoria. “Well, if it isn’t the former jailbird himself,” EJ said as he approached. EJ smirked and offered his hand. “No hard feelings, I hope,” EJ said. “Piss off,” Xander muttered as he walked away.

In Jada’s office at the station, Jada hugged Belle and offered her condolences. “I can’t believe you’re at work right now,” Jada said. Belle said she wanted to work on her two big cases as a distraction. Belle thanked Jada for the police protection for Philip. Jada said she hoped that Philip could identify his attacker so that they could close the case. Shawn walked into Jada’s office. “I hope you’re taking the rest of the night off. How are you doing?” Shawn asked. As Shawn started to offer his support, Belle walked out.

“Did something happen between you two?” Jada asked. After a moment, Shawn sighed and noted that it had been a difficult day. “I know that John was Belle’s dad, but I’m sorry for your loss, too,” Jada said. When Jada asked Shawn why he had stopped in, Shawn apologized for having lied to her.

“I guess Belle told you everything?” Shawn asked. Jada explained that Belle had told her about the Versavix quest. “And before you say more, I want you to know that I am thrilled that it worked,” Jada said. “Me too. Except,” Shawn said with a shrug. As Shawn started to say that they never would have been able to break into the warehouse without John’s help, Jada cut him off. “It’s probably best that I don’t know the details. Since, you know, I am your boss,” Jada said. Shawn thanked Jada for her understanding.

In Philip’s hospital room, Kayla thanked Kate for having attended John’s service. “How was the wake?” Kate asked. “It was perfect. It was a real celebration of John’s life, you know? A lot of tears, memories, laughter. It was great,” Kayla said. “Sounds like he would have really liked it,” Kate said. Kate apologized for having skipped the wake in order to sit with Philip.

“His labs and his vitals are really showing a tremendous amount of improvement. And now that we have police surveillance outside his room, I think you can go home and get some rest,” Kayla said. Kate confessed that her instinct told her not to stay away from Philip as long as Xander was out of jail. Kayla said that she believed Philip would wake up in a matter of days.

“I need Philip to come back to me. Because when he does, the first thing he is going to do is identify Xander as his attacker. And then I’m not going to rest until I put Xander Kiriakis behind bars,” Kate said. After Kayla left, Kate talked to Philip about the misplaced manuscript that she had been reading to him.

“It might seem risque for a mother to be reading to her son, but believe me, I’m leaving out all the explicit parts. I thought you might enjoy the love story,” Kate said. With a sigh, Kate wondered aloud if she should attempt to track down the missing manuscript. Kate promised to return after her errands.

When Kate arrived at Titan, she was surprised to see Alex and Stephanie making out on the desk. Kate apologized for the interruption. “No worries. Steph, I will catch up with you later on when I’m finished,” Alex said. Stephanie hurried out of the office. Kate joked that the scene she had interrupted could have been ripped from the manuscript Alex had given Kate. “Please tell me you’re here to accept my job offer,” Alex said. Kate told Alex that she did not think Alex would be happy with her.

“Speaking of One Stormy Night, which I enjoyed the hell out of, let me tell you, I have somehow misplaced the manuscript,” Kate confessed. Kate explained she had looked everywhere for the novel, but she had been unable to locate it at the hospital. “Are you serious?” Alex yelped. Kate apologized, and she said she felt terrible. After a moment, Alex said he understood.

“I’ve been dreading having this conversation with you, actually, especially because I keep imagining that someone might steal it and then claim it as their own,” Kate said. “Let’s pray, for both of our sakes, that doesn’t happen,” Alex said. Kate promised to keep searching. “I know you probably think that this might have changed my mind about the job offer, but it hasn’t,” Alex said. Kate declined the job offer.

“I thought you were leaning toward a yes?” Alex said. “I was. That’s before one of your CEO’s nearly murdered my son,” Kate yelled. Kate refused to work for Xander. “If Xander is the only sticking point for you, maybe you’d reconsider my offer if he was convicted and had to step down as CEO,” Alex said. Kate agreed to reconsider.

In the town square, Belle was telling Claire on the phone that she would visit soon. As Belle ended her call, she saw EJ. Belle continued to talk to her phone until EJ exited the square. When Belle dropped the act, EJ appeared out of nowhere. “Are you going to say goodbye to Claire?” EJ asked. Belle blushed.

“If you really don’t want to see or talk to me, just say the word, and I’ll respect your wishes,” EJ said. Belle told EJ that she was preoccupied with a variety of problems. “My hope was that I could alleviate your pain, but if I’m just going to be another problem for you to deal with,” EJ said. “I didn’t mean it like that. Listen, my feelings for you have not changed,” Belle said. EJ asked if Belle’s only objection to their relationship was how John would feel about it.

“I need some time to figure things out,” Belle said. “Whatever you need. But as I’ve already told you, I love you, Belle. And I wish that I could be there for you right now,” EJ said. After EJ left, Belle sat down at a cafe table. “Thought you went home,” Shawn said. “Just needed some coffee,” Belle said. Shawn asked Belle to let him know when she planned to visit Claire so that they could coordinate their trips.

Belle started to warn Shawn that she had told Jada about Shawn’s true whereabouts during his sick leave, but Shawn said he had already talked to Jada about it. “I really didn’t mean to get you in trouble. But honestly, she knew that you were lying,” Belle said. Shawn said everything was okay. “But I did get the sense that [Jada] wasn’t very happy that I told you and I didn’t tell her,” Shawn added. Confused, Belle asked Shawn if he was back together with Jada.

“No, we were never together. She’s my boss, and so she just doesn’t like to be left out of the loop,” Shawn said. With a nod, Belle noted that she did not like lying either. “To other people or to myself,” Belle said. Belle confessed that she was confused about her feelings. Shawn reminded Belle that they could not rely on one another the way they had when they had been married. Belle smiled. “I know I can count on you if I need you,” Belle said. Shawn smiled back. “I will always care about you. And I’ll always be here for you,” Shawn said. As Belle and Shawn hugged, EJ saw them from across the square.

Kayla was exiting the Brady Pub with dinner when she ran into Xander. “You made a promise to me that you were gonna be a force for good, that you were going to run the hospital in an ethical manner. Do you remember that?” Kayla yelled. Xander rolled his eyes, and he said he was not in the mood for a lecture.

“Oh really? Facing your own consequences for your actions has made you grumpy? Well, let me see why. Maybe because you lost your chance to buy the hospital? You completely destroyed your marriage all for, what, some sick power trip? Your inability to control your anger may have just ruined your life for good this time,” Kayla argued.

As Kayla walked away, Sarah called Xander’s phone and asked to talk about Victoria. When Xander arrived at the Kiriakis mansion, Sarah was alone. “So it appears your phone is working after all,” Xander muttered. “I’m not going to apologize to you for ignoring your calls, Xander. I needed a little time to process the fact that my husband tried to kill his brother,” Sarah countered. “Allegedly,” Xander stressed. Xander asked Sarah if she had changed her mind about joint custody.

“If you try to go down this road and sue for custody, there’s not a judge in the world that will agree with you right now,” Sarah argued. Xander asked Sarah if she intended to keep him from his daughter forever. Sarah explained that she had wanted to talk about visitation. Xander softened.

“Here is the offer. You can have supervised visits here at the mansion. You will agree to my terms. You will not show up unannounced. And you will only come at times that work for me and Victoria. That is it, take it or leave it,” Sarah said. “I’ll take it,” Xander whispered. Xander said he wanted to see Victoria before he left, but Sarah refused to wake their daughter. Xander asked Sarah to give Victoria the gift he had bought for her, and he placed the bag on the table.

“Tell her it’s from her dad, who loves her and misses her very much, if that isn’t a violation of your terms,” Xander said. As Xander started to leave, Sarah said, “I did not choose this. You did. And when Philip wakes up and tells everyone that you are the one that tried to kill him, you will surely go to prison. And if you did do it, then you deserve to. So no, you cannot go wake up our sleeping baby to give her a gift or for any other reason. Because her mother makes the rules now.” Xander gritted his teeth, and he told Sarah that she loved to be in control.

“You’re the one who broke the sacred trust of our marriage. The only reason you think I beat up Philip is because you created the conditions that you know would drive me to do that,” Xander argued. Sarah refused to be blamed for Xander’s attempt to murder Philip. “And when you do go to prison and miss out on our daughter’s life, the only person that you’ll have to blame is yourself,” Sarah yelled.

After Xander left, Sarah was furiously pacing the living room when Maggie walked in. “I take it your conversation with Xander didn’t go well,” Maggie said. “I hate him so much. The worst part is I hate how much I love him,” Sarah said as she started to cry. Maggie hugged her daughter.

When Kayla returned to the hospital with her food, she noticed the One Stormy Night manuscript at the nurses’ station. Stephanie walked over, and she asked Kayla her thoughts about Steve’s retirement. “I think all we can really do is support [Steve], and if it’s not a good decision, let him come to that conclusion on his own,” Kayla said. Kayla confessed that she hoped the retirement would stick and that it would herald a less dangerous section of their lives.

“In that case, do you think I could host a special dinner tonight to celebrate dad?” Stephanie asked. Kayla agreed, and Stephanie left. Kayla turned back toward the desk, and she picked up the manuscript and returned to her office. Kayla was opening the cover of the novel when EJ entered. “Do you have a moment?” EJ asked. “For the new owner of the hospital, sure, why not?” Kayla said. EJ told Kayla that he was looking forward to working with her.

“I know you were reluctant to support me,” EJ said. “I didn’t support you,” Kayla noted. EJ chuckled. “Would you prefer to have an attempted murderer as your boss?” EJ asked. Kayla reminded EJ that he had his own criminal past. “I would like to believe that you have changed, as you say, but I highly doubt it,” Kayla said. Kayla noted that the hospital needed a good, honest person at the helm, and she hoped that EJ would prove to be that person. “Otherwise, we are all going down together,” Kayla said.

EJ confirmed that he had talked to Dr. Russell about the administration of Versavix to Bo, and he knew that it was responsible for Bo’s recovery. When Kayla argued that EJ was only interested in making money off the drug, EJ argued that his goal was to run a financially sound hospital for the community. “In that spirit, I had my lawyers and accountants review the hospital budget, and there are a few changes I’d like to make,” EJ said. EJ handed Kayla his budget, and she promised to review it and get back to him. After EJ left, Kayla tossed the budget aside and opened the One Stormy Night manuscript.

When Stephanie arrived at home, Jada was curled up on the couch. Stephanie asked Jada to join the family for a retirement dinner for Steve. Your dad is so full of passion and vigor. I mean, I can’t imagine him being ready to retire,” Jada said. Stephanie agreed. “I guess with John gone now, it just wouldn’t be the same,” Stephanie said.

Alex knocked on the front door. “I thought you were working late,” Stephanie said. “Change of plans,” Alex said. As Alex nuzzled Stephanie’s neck, Jada cleared her throat. Jada told Stephanie she would see Stephanie at the gathering, and she left. Stephanie invited Alex to the dinner, and she suggested they return to his place after.

At the hospital, Philip was alone in his room when Xander slipped in. “Finally, we’re alone,” Xander said. Down the hallway, Kate told Roman on the phone that she would be home after she checked on Philip. In Philip’s room, Xander picked up a pillow from a chair, and he stared at his unconscious brother. “Don’t worry. This will all be over before you know it,” Xander said.
