What happened on Days of our Lives

Holly was sitting in her room when she texted Doug III to check on him. When Doug did not respond, Holly left him a voicemail, and she asked him to call back. At the Brady Pub, Doug saw Holly’s text, and he ignored it. Doug talked to Roman about a job, and Roman gave Doug forms to fill out about his past experience. When Doug hesitated, Roman asked what was wrong. Doug admitted that he did not have an address because he was staying at the homeless shelter downtown.
“I understand if that means you don’t want to hire me,” Doug said. As Doug rose to leave, Roman told him to sit down. “First of all, there’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, staying at the shelter. There are a lot of folks out there struggling to keep a roof over their head,” Roman said. Roman told Doug that he had a room for rent above the pub. “That’s generous of you Mr. Brady, but I can’t take the room. Right now, I can barely afford a side of fries, let alone first and last month’s rent,” Doug said. Roman told Doug that he was not the first man that had needed a little help.
“You remind me of my younger brothers Frankie and Max. Once upon a time, they were two very young kids who had no place to go until my parents adopted them,” Roman said. “The more I think about it, I doubt you would want me under your roof or working for your pub,” Doug said. As Doug stood up, Roman ordered him to sit down. Doug slowly complied.
“It sounds to me, Doug, like you don’t just need a job. You need some guidance as well,” Roman said. “You’re right about that,” Doug said. Roman told Doug that regardless of his past mistakes, everyone deserved another chance. “You’ve got all the time in the world to turn this around. But it starts now. The job is yours if you want it and so is the room,” Roman said. Roman offered to take the rent out of Doug’s paycheck. “I don’t know what to say,” Doug stammered. “Just say you’ll accept,” Roman said. Doug nodded yes, and he shook Roman’s hand.
At the police station, Jada asked Shawn if he had any updates on Ava. “No. She’s in the wind. But the good news is we’ve got plenty of other suspects to investigate right here in Salem,” Shawn said. “I have to say that it’s pretty damning that even JJ considers Gabi a suspect,” Jada noted. Shawn agreed, and he said he understood how Gabi could have overreacted out of protectiveness for her brother.
“I know exactly how she felt,” Jada said. When Shawn raised an eyebrow, Jada smiled. “You want to know if my name should be on this list of suspects right under Rafe’s, don’t you?” Jada asked. Shawn started to say no, but Jada told him it was his job to ask questions. After a moment, Shawn confessed that he had been concerned when he had found a drunken Jada the night of the shooting without her gun. “But my heart tells me that you didn’t do it, because I don’t think you’re capable of doing such a thing,” Shawn said. Jada told Shawn that he was wrong.
“After what that son of a bitch did to me, I was more than capable of killing EJ DiMera,” Jada said. “What are you trying to tell me?” Shawn asked. Jada explained that she had been furious the night of the shooting, so she had locked her gun in her desk drawer that night. “I didn’t trust myself having a weapon on me, not in that kind of head space,” Jada confessed. Jada said that she had been capable of shooting EJ, but that she had not done it.
In the Hernandez kitchen, Rafe scowled at the legal pad that Leo had used to write out his list of suspects in EJ’s shooting. “Hey, roomie!” Leo said brightly as he entered the kitchen. “What the hell is this?” Rafe asked. Leo explained that it was for a story that he was working on for the paper. “It looks like a list of suspects. And both my name and my sister’s name are on it,” Rafe growled. “I’m only doing my job,” Leo said. Rafe called Leo a grifter.
“I am now a journalist for the Spectator, on a mission to find out which rapscallion shot Elvis Aaron DiMera,” Leo stressed. Rafe warned Leo to stay away from Gabi. “She has been to prison not only once but twice for crimes that she did not commit. So I will be damned if I am gonna sit back and let her be railroaded a third time by some two-bit hack who has been given carte blanche to spread libelous garbage,” Rafe said. Rafe told Leo that if he searched Gabi’s belongings again, he would kick Leo out of the house.
After Leo left, Shawn called Rafe, and he asked about Rafe’s service weapon. Rafe grumbled that Shawn had issued the weapon to Arnold, not him. “And yeah, I’ll get it back to you as soon as I can. Just been a little busy being processed back in at the FBI,” Rafe said. Shawn thanked Rafe, and he ended the call.
At Gabi Chic, Gabi asked Javi about the sales projection report typos. “I apologize. I thought I used spellcheck,” Javi said. Gabi yelled at Javi to fix the report. “I’m sorry, but are you really this mad over a couple spelling errors, or is something else bothering you?” Javi asked. Gabi apologized. Javi said he understood why Gabi would be upset after Titan had taken over the company she had built from scratch. Gabi admitted that she was not just worried about her company.
“I’m worried about myself, my freedom, knowing that my boyfriend and yours are trying to tie me to EJ's shooting,” Gabi said. Gabi told Javi that she was surprised that he had defended Leo after he had looked through her purse. “I’m sorry about that. I know that Leo could be a bit extra,” Javi said. Gabi warned Javi that Leo would use her for a story. Javi advised Gabi not to be rattled by JJ or Leo. “Because we both know that you did not shoot EJ DiMera,” Javi said. With a nod, Gabi asked Javi to make a powerpoint for their presentation while she picked up dinner. Javi hugged Gabi, and he told her to take her time.
After Gabi left, Leo showed up with dinner for Javi. Javi warned Leo that he was not welcome around Gabi. After a snide comment from Leo about Rafe, Javi asked Leo if something had happened. Leo told Javi that Rafe had found his list of suspects and had confronted him. “I am an investigative journalist. That means I am duty-bound to seek out the truth. And as we have discussed, the truth is that both Rafe and Gabi had strong motives for wanting EJ dead. I’m just doing my job,” Leo argued.
As Javi commented on the unsavoriness of Leo’s job, Gabi returned. “What the hell are you doing in my office?” Gabi asked. Leo explained he had been dropping off food for Javi and Gabi. When Javi warned Leo and Gabi to be nice, Gabi scoffed. “Why should I be nice to this grifter, this sleazebag? And if it wasn’t bad enough that I already caught you going through my purse, now you’re using my cousin to gain access to my office?” Gabi asked. Leo denied the accusation, but Gabi did not believe him.
“I want him out of here after me. Is that clear?” Gabi said. Gabi picked up her purse and the food, and she walked out. Javi groaned. “Working for Gabi is becoming a nightmare,” Javi complained. Leo urged Javi to quit, but Javi said he did not want to abandon his cousin after she had given him a job and a place to live when he had needed it. Leo told Javi that he loved his loyalty and his heart. Leo warned Javi that if he continued to work with Gabi, it could ruin Javi’s relationship with her permanently.
At the police station, Jada thanked Shawn for having made the call to Rafe for her. As Shawn smiled, Leo walked into the bullpen. Leo announced that he wanted a comment from the police about whether they were willing to arrest a suspect other than Ava. “By my estimation, it’s either Rafe Hermandez, his sister Gabi, or you, Commissioner Hunter,” Leo said. “Excuse me?” Jada said. Leo rattled off his reasons why Jada was a suspect.
“The Salem PD has no comment. Now go,” Jada said. “I am nothing if not persistent. You have not seen the last of me,” Leo said. After Leo stomped out, Jada complained about the investigation. When Shawn offered to talk to Chad, Jada declined. “We don’t want it to look like we’re hiding something,” Jada said. Shawn agreed. After a moment, Shawn apologized for having doubted Jada. “You’re too good of a person,” Shawn said. “Same goes for you, detective,” Jada said.
Leo returned to Gabi Chic with more food for Javi. “For the love of god, please tell me you are going to quit this job,” Leo said. “Well, I have to admit, you did make a pretty compelling argument. And if I’m being honest, I’m not passionate about being a fashion assistant,” Javi admitted. Leo asked Javi what interested him. Javi told Leo that they would talk over dinner. When Leo joked that dessert would be at home, Javi knocked stuff off of Gabi’s desk. “Who says we have to wait until we’re at home?” Javi said.
When Gabi returned home, Rafe was sitting in the kitchen. As Gabi complained about her day, Rafe sipped his beer. “Are you listening to me?” Gabi asked. “Did you borrow my gun to shoot EJ DiMera?” Rafe asked. Gabi gasped. “Seriously? I mean, how many more times am I going to be accused of attempted murder this week?” Gabi yelled. Rafe told Gabi that he knew that she had taken his weapon the night of the shooting. “I was looking [for my service weapon]. But it was gone. And so were you,” Rafe said. Rafe noted that his gun had reappeared in the safe after Gabi had returned that night.
“There weren’t any bullets missing. Well, obviously you could have replaced them. Just be honest with me. Did you go to the DiMera mansion that night with my gun?” Rafe asked. After a moment, Gabi admitted she had gone to the mansion that night. “Why?” Rafe asked. Gabi said she had been furious, and she had wanted to confront EJ. “As I was approaching the doors to that gloomy, horrible mansion, I overheard him arguing with someone, so I took a step back to conceal myself. I was afraid that someone would see me,” Gabi said. Rafe asked who had been arguing with EJ. With a shrug, Gabi said she only knew that it had been a male voice.
“Did you hear a gunshot?” Rafe asked. “No. I decided to get out of there before someone caught me on the DiMera grounds,” Gabi said. Gabi stressed that she did not shoot EJ. “Please tell me that you believe me,” Gabi asked. Rafe said he did. Gabi sighed with relief. “I just wish you had told me all of this a little bit sooner,” Rafe said. After a moment’s hesitation, Gabi added that when she had exited the property, she had seen Ava near the front door.
“She didn’t see me, but she heard me, because she suddenly turned and ran to her car and sped off,” Gabi confirmed. “Then she couldn’t have been the shooter,” Rafe said. With a shrug, Gabi noted that Ava could have returned or the man that had argued with EJ could have been the shooter. “Whoever it was, I’m just glad you and I are in the clear,” Rafe said.
Sophia was curled up in bed when Tate knocked on her bedroom door. “Your mom said it was okay to come up. I just wanted to check on you,” Tate said. “The way I see it, my life is pretty much over,” Sophia complained. Sophia lamented that she could not finish out her senior year at school. With a sigh, Sophia told Tate what Amy had said about the failed adoption having been a sign from god.
“I just want to make one single decision about my own life,” Sophia said. After a moment, Tate reminded Sophia that she was about to turn 18 and become a legal adult. “Your mom can’t stop you from doing anything, including putting the baby up for adoption,” Tate said. “You want me to defy my mother?” Sophia asked. Tate stressed that Sophia should only put the baby up for adoption if that was what she wanted to do. With a shake of her head, Sophia noted that she had never defied her mother before. Sophia admitted that she wanted to defy Amy now.
“Maybe I can’t go to prom or finish my senior year, but I want to go to college. And I want to have a life. My life. And I know that you want that too. We can’t let one mistake take all of that away from us. So I’m gonna do it. For the first time in my life, I’m gonna stand up to my mother,” Sophia said.
While Sophia was in the bathroom, Tate called Holly. Holly agreed to meet up with Tate at the pub. As Tate ended his call, Sophia returned. Tate asked Sophia if she was having second thoughts, but Sophia said she was certain that an adoption was the best option for their baby. Tate agreed. Tate said he needed to leave, and Sophia asked him if he was going to tell Holly about the adoption. “That doesn’t bother you, does it?” Tate asked. Sophia said no, and she asked Tate to give Holly her best. After Tate left, Sophia touched her belly.
When Holly arrived at the pub, Tate was already seated at a table. “I’m here. What did you want to tell me?” Holly asked. Tate told Holly that he and Sophia had decided to place the baby with an adoption agency against Amy’s wishes. “Sophia will be 18 soon, which means legally she can make her own decisions,” Tate explained. “That’s definitely news,” Holly said. Tate asked Holly if there was any chance that they could reconcile.
Before Holly could answer, Roman interrupted to say hello. Roman asked Tate if he could help him in the back. “I’ll just be a minute,” Tate said. After Tate followed Roman into the kitchen, Doug walked down the stairs. Holly smiled. As Doug sat down at Holly’s table, Roman returned, and he asked Doug if he was settled into his room.
“It’s great, thanks,” Doug said. “You’re living here?” Holly asked. With a grin, Doug said he would be living and working at the pub. Holly thanked Roman. “Don’t thank me. I’m gonna work this guy’s butt off. All right, I’ll see you bright and early in the morning,” Roman said. “I’ll see you,” Doug said. Roman walked off, and Doug told Holly that Roman was the nicest guy he had ever met.
When Doug noted that he was happy to be able to have a place to live and a way to pay off his debts, Holly told him that she wished he had talked to her before he had left the Kiriakis mansion. “I knew you’d try to talk me out of it. And well, I didn’t want to cause any more trouble for you,” Doug said. “I don’t consider being your friend trouble. I’m just so happy to see you,” Holly said. Holly leaned over and hugged Doug. Tate returned.
“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Tate said. “You’re not interrupting,” Holly said excitedly. Before Holly could share Doug’s good news, Tate curtly noted that he needed to return to Sophia. “She was pretty bummed I was coming to see you, so the sooner I get back, the better. But you two have fun, okay?” Tate said. Tate rushed out, and Holly ran after him.
Outside the pub, Tate was already too far ahead of Holly, and she stopped her pursuit. Doug joined her. “I’m sorry about my bad timing. It feels like that’s a theme in my life,” Doug said. “That’s okay. It seems to be the theme for Tate and me too,” Holly said. Holly told Doug that she would not let Tate spoil her good mood. In the nearby alleyway, someone photographed Holly and Doug talking.
