Kayla was shocked to see EJ sitting at her desk when she entered her office. "I am afraid you and I have some unfinished business to discuss," EJ said. "I figured I'd give you a night to sleep on my offer." Kayla still didn't want to accept, so EJ threatened to go to the board.

"I am giving you the opportunity to be a hero and save this place from shutting down," EJ pointed out. Kayla said she feared the offer would come with strings, but EJ assured her that there were no strings. Kayla didn't care. "I cannot in good faith allow the DiMeras to take over this wonderful hospital, a part of Tom and Alice's legacy, so good luck with the board," she said.

EJ warned Kayla her moral stand was pointless "because I am going to own this hospital one way or another."

After EJ left, Sarah popped in before her weekend away. She was surprised to learn that Kayla had sent Jeffrey Russell to the medical conference in Sarah's place. Sarah was further shocked to hear EJ wanted to buy the hospital. She was also excited until Kayla told Sarah that she turned down EJ's offer.

Sarah admitted she'd like to keep her job and keep the hospital open. "But Kayla, you're chief of staff. This is your call to make," Sarah said. She also thought if EJ was interested, then there had to be other buyers out there.

Later, Marlena found EJ at the nurses' station and wondered why he was in such a bad mood. "Call me cynical, but I am finding trying to do something good for someone else is not all that rewarding," EJ said. Marlena agreed that it was indeed cynical. A grumpy EJ lamented that he nearly died and "my son has no empathy for me whatsoever."

Marlena could tell EJ just wanted to talk, so she listened. "Marlena, how can I continue to change and evolve if everyone is so skeptical that I'm even able to change?" he asked.

Marlena chose to be blunt. "You must know why people are skeptical. You've hurt so many people in the past. If you really want people to think better of you...you gotta give them a chance. People will come around... eventually...most of them."

EJ was encouraged. "So, you really think people like me are capable of change?" he asked. "Well, I wouldn't be in the business I'm in if I didn't believe that," she replied. Marlena mentioned that Belle thought he could change, "so, I think you've got some hope."

However, Marlena noted that she worried about his relationship with Belle "because I've seen what happens to people you care about." Marlena then asked if EJ loved Belle. EJ refused to answer that question but assured Marlena that he deeply cared for Belle. When Marlena brought up Sami, EJ said he would no longer defend his past actions with her.

When EJ got home, he saw Dr. Russell outside the front door and told him Kayla had turned down his offer to buy the hospital. "Hang tight, my friend. We may have lost today's battle, but we will win the war," EJ assured.

Johnny dropped by Xander's new office at Xander's behest. Xander asked if Johnny had given any more thought to his offer, but Johnny wanted to know why Xander wanted to hire him at all. "I think it would be nice for the remaining DiMera employees to have an actual, respectable DiMera around," Xander explained.

Johnny wondered if Xander wanted to use him to get to EJ. "If that were true, would that be a deal breaker?" Xander asked. Johnny said it was quite the opposite and that would make the offer more attractive. He promised to think about the offer and said he would be in touch.

Cat and Chad met for breakfast with some Sweet Bits treats in Horton Town Square. Chad had asked to meet because he wanted to tell her something in person, so he did. "I talked to my brother about the auction date, and it's officially off," Chad said as he took a bite of a Danish.

"Oh, he canceled it?" Cat asked. "No, I did," Chad replied before casually taking another bite. Chad assured her that EJ's donation was non-refundable. Cat didn't seem too disturbed by this turn of events because EJ confused her. Chad claimed EJ was determined to be a more generous person since emerging from his coma.

Chad surprised Cat when he told her that he had offered to reimburse EJ, but EJ didn't accept. "He gave me a counteroffer, which I accepted. He just thought that the money should go toward you going on a date with me," Chad said with a smile.

Chad couldn't seem to admit that he just wanted to date Cat. "We're friends now and as friends, I'm going to save you from an awkward date with my brother," he said. Chad pointed out that they made a great team organizing the fundraiser. "So, are you going to go on this date with me or what?" he asked. Cat finally agreed and said yes.

When Johnny appeared, Cat left to get more coffee so Chad could talk to his nephew. Chad tried to get Johnny to agree to see EJ, but Johnny didn't want to hear it.

Johnny's next stop was The Brady Pub for breakfast with Marlena. She advised her grandson to allow Chanel to grieve her loss, but to make sure she knew Johnny was there for her. Marlena told Johnny that he needed to figure out his own identity, "and the only way you can do that is by talking to your father."

Johnny agreed to think about it. He was then put on the spot when EJ walked into the pub just as Marlena walked out.

Abe greeted Chanel in his and Paulina's new apartment, which looked like it was in Marlena's building. "It's so much more spacious than the last one. I can't believe how quickly you got everything unpacked and organized," she commented. Abe could tell that Chanel was still down in the dumps and asked her if she was okay.

Chanel admitted that she had been having trouble sleeping and said how much it hurt now that the adoption had fallen through. Abe said he understood the pain of losing a child and told her how he and Lexie raised Zack as their own for two years until they learned he was really Bo and Hope's son. Then, they were blessed with Theo, who completed their family.

Chanel worried there would never be a miracle baby for her because Johnny no longer wanted to be a father. "I'm not sure that Johnny and I will be able to heal our hearts the same way that you and Lexie were. I am not sure that Johnny and I will be able to find our way back to each other," she cried.

Chanel wondered why Johnny didn't confide his doubts until after she got so excited about adopting Tate and Sophia's baby. Abe agreed that Johnny didn't handle things right, but that Johnny likely feels bad. Chanel feared that Johnny was losing it the way Lexie did when they had to return Zack. She then realized that Johnny might have shot EJ.

Abe asked if that was what Chanel was thinking. She admitted she couldn't stop thinking about when Johnny said that EJ was dead to him and wished he had died. She mentioned how Johnny was missing for a while on the night EJ was shot. "When he came back, he seemed so distant," Chanel said. Abe advised that Chanel talk to Johnny about her concerns.

Xander and Sarah later met up in Horton Town Square, where they got a snack before embarking on their trip. Sarah told Xander that EJ offered to buy the hospital, but Kayla turned him down. When Sarah walked away to run an errand, Xander called Alex and told him to make an offer to the hospital ASAP.

Chanel soon came across Sarah and Xander sitting on a bench and offered to get them some scones. After Sarah took a bite, she noted that hers tasted strange before she suddenly started gagging and choking.
