Patrick Muldoon, who became an instant fan favorite when he debuted as Austin Reed on Days of our Lives in 1992, is back on the show. The news of his return was announced by the performer himself on social media.

Patrick Muldoon returns to Days of our Lives

The video revealing Muldoon's return began with him walking through a door at the Burbank Studios where Days of our Lives tapes. He was wearing sunglasses and appeared to be (but not really) unsure of where he was.

"Studio 4? Studio 4. It's gotta be...is it Studio 2?" Muldoon inquired. "Listen, I just got off the 101 South [freeway] in Burbank. Studio 2 and 4? Oh! Oh, my God. I'm in Salem! Feels good to be back!"

The social media post doesn't indicate whether or not Muldoon has recently returned to DAYS or if his air date is imminent (which means he was taping scenes about 8 or 9 months ago). The Peacock drama tapes approximately 8 months in advance, so if Muldoon is taping scenes now, viewers won't see him on our screens until next year!

Happy DAYS

Muldoon first joined DAYS 33 (!) years ago as Austin Reed, an aspiring boxer, who fell in love with Carrie Brady (Christie Clark). Their epic love story was thwarted by Carrie's half-sister, Sami (Allison Sweeney), who schemed and lied to win Austin's heart over and over. Sami tried and failed to pass off her son Will (Chandler Massey) as Austin's son.

Muldoon left DAYS in 1995 and began a successful career in primetime (Melrose Place) and the big screen (Starship Troopers). The actor also played the lead role in the Hallmark holiday movie, A Boyfriend for Christmas. In 2016, he played opposite former DAYS co-star Kate Mansi (now, Kristina, General Hospital) in the film Boyfriend Killer.

Muldoon is also a successful movie producer, having helmed the films The Card Counter, The Comeback Trail, and Marlowe, which starred Liam Neeson (Taken), and Jessica Lange (Tootsie).

After Muldoon left DAYS, the role of Austin was recast with Austin Peck. Both actors have returned to the part over the years. Muldoon came home to Salem in 2011, and he remained in the role again until the following year.

Muldoon's Days of our Lives pals, including Eric Martsolf (Brady) and fans, weighed in with supportive comments on the post that announced his return. "I like the original Austin better," remarked @robcincy. That prompted a response from @daysofourjarlena, who pointed out, "Then, you're in luck because this is the original Austin."

No word yet on if Austin's true love Carrie will be coming back to the show again. Viewers just saw Carrie on their screens last week when Clark returned for episodes that paid tribute to John Black (the late, great Drake Hogestyn).
