Days of our Lives comings and goings: Susan Elena Matus as the mysterious Catharina

Days of our Lives is finally about to introduce us to the woman John Black thought he killed decades ago before he ever arrived in Salem. Konstantin's (John Kapelos) daughter, Catharina, is alive and well and will soon reunite with her daughter, Cat Greene (AnnaLynne McCord). Susan Elena Matus debuts in the role on December 11.

Getting to know Susan Elena Matus

Matus took to Instagram to announce her new gig. Her post was short and sweet as she gave a brief description of the new character she is playing.

"Catherina, a survivor with complicated family secrets, will protect her children at all cost," Matus wrote alongside a few pics, one of which has Cat holding a gun during her first day on-screen.

According to IMDb, Matus hails from San Francisco and is of Nicaraguan and Danish/Irish descent. She is married to actor Michael Irby, and they share one child. Matus has appeared in a number of primetime series, including CBS' The Unit, where she played Sarah Irvine from 2006 to 2009. You have also seen her in Man Without a Head and Beneath the Banyan Tree.

A brand-new Days of our Lives family?

DAYS fans met members of the Greene family earlier this year, but the family will finally be complete when the Greene siblings' mother returns to the scene. Mark (Jonah Robinson) has been taking care of his younger siblings, Aaron (Louis Tomeo) and Felicity (Kennedy Garcia), while Cat has been working to bring down Clyde Weston (James Read) and bring her mother home. Clyde has apparently been keeping Catharina hostage for months.

Before the happy Salem reunion can happen, Cat, Chad (Billy Flynn), Gabi (Cherie Jimenez), and JJ (Casey Moss) have to succeed with their plan to finally catch Clyde and put him behind bars for good. The master criminal always manages to find his way to freedom and cause more trouble. From the looks of some preview photos, it looks like Catharina fights back and makes sure Clyde can never hurt anyone again.

However, a mystery will still remain. How is Catharina alive when John and Konstantin were convinced she was dead all these years? Did Konstantin know the truth all along? And how did Catharina's children all end up living in Salem? Finally, will we learn who their dad is? Stay tuned to find out...
