Sonny on Days of our Lives, played by Zach Tinker, may be living away from Salem now, but his portrayer is staying busy in the thriller film genre. Tinker is starring as a lead for the first time in Beneath The Light in which he plays a young man who is tasked with repairing a lighthouse and ends up facing the mistakes of his past.

These are Days of our Lives

Beneath The Light is co-written and produced by Dr. Cindy Davis Seng and directed by John Baumgartner (The Conners). The story tells the tale of a man named Jacob, played by Tinker, who is tasked with fixing up a lighthouse. Shooting on location in Lake Erie at the 108-year-old Lorain Lighthouse was instrumental in allowing Tinker to fully immerse himself in his role.

“It was really nice to be shooting at this big, creepy lighthouse,” he tells Soap Central. “The less I have to use my imagination, the more I can focus on being present, which is better for me.”

Still, Tinker says there were certainly challenges when it came to getting into Jake's headspace. “My character’s in between work, he’s just lost his mother, and he’s got no real extended family,” Tinker says. “He is super-lost.” Upping the stakes is the fact that Jake has a panic disorder, and he’s running out of his medication.

“Jake feels like a guy who’s at the end of his rope,” Tinker continues. “It was a challenging role to embody for that reason. He’s off on a location, he’s by himself, and he’s working all day, and then he goes home to a hotel room. You’re in a mindset all day. It was a mentally exhausting role.”

"This is an intense thriller with a shocking twist that draws you into the central character's dilemma from the very first scene," says Lise Romanoff, CEO, Managing Director, Vision Films. "What is real and what is imagined?"

The Days of our Lives actor will share screentime with co-stars in the thriller. “I was lucky enough to work with John Piper Ferguson (Suits), who is truly an ‘actor’s actor,’” Tinker shares. “I got to do a fair amount of work with him. Then, I got to work with Ana Nicole Chavez (The Rookie).”

Tinker’s amassed a loyal following through his soap roles. He’s theorizing that viewers who check out Beneath The Light will witness a new side to the performer who’s brought Sonny and Fenmore to life. “They’ll get to see me be more emotional in a different way,” the Days of our Lives fan favorite says. “On soap operas, there’s a lot of emotion, sadness, and anger, but it’s very dialogue-carried. You explain why you’re feeling a certain way on daytime.

Beneath The Light is about a lot of internal pain, emotion, processing, and watching,” Tinker says. “It’s a different sort of experience in terms of stakes and emotional processing.”
