On Days of Our Lives, the mystery about who shot EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) still looms in Salem. While the DiMera seemed to have recalled seeing Johnny (Carson Boatman) enter the room with a gun on the night of the shooting, EJ hasn’t mentioned this to anyone. It has yet to be shown to the audience exactly who it was that shot EJ, and Feuerriegel explained why EJ hasn’t outed his son just yet.

He’s turning over a new leaf

To say that EJ and Johnny’s relationship is strained would be an understatement. The young man has made it known that he wants nothing to do with his ruthless old man and has even stated that he wishes his Dad were dead. There was a moment recently, when EJ fell in Horton Square and Johnny ran over to help him, but at the last second caught himself and walked away. This mistreatment of his dad would make a lesser person want to lash out, but not EJ, who’s been sitting on the idea that his own son tried to kill him.

Feuerriegel spoke with Soap Opera Digest about what’s going on in EJ’s mind. After being nearly killed by a bullet, EJ seems to have begun transforming himself into a nicer person. The actor explained that this kind of change allows him to play EJ differently with other characters. “I like bringing in different kinds of personality styles for EJ, like when he’s with his mother [Susan] or when he’s being cutthroat or when he’s with Johnny,” he stated.

Despite attempting to be a changed person, most people in Salem don’t believe EJ is sincere about it. Feuerriegel stated that, as a result, “Over time, that builds up and every now and then old EJ pops through.” But despite all that, including Johnny’s current animosity toward his Dad, the actor stated that EJ is going to continue to love his son even if that love is countered by Johnny’s hate.

When asked why EJ hasn’t revealed to Johnny that he remembers their encounter with his armed son, Feuerriegel explained that EJ is probably awaiting a good moment to reveal it. Also, Johnny’s been dealing with issues like keeping his marriage to Chanel (Raven Bowens) together despite their adoption issues. The actor stated that EJ’s probably thinking, “If I just let sleeping dogs lie, then we could potentially just move on with life.”

Ultimately, the Days of Our Lives star felt that EJ would probably hold on to that information until he found it appropriate to reveal. For example, Johnny could once again go on a tirade claiming that his Dad doesn’t love him, and EJ could counter with, “Look, I knew about this and I said nothing to protect you. That’s how much I care about you.” EJ’s probably banking on that stunning revelation to help patch up their relationship.
