With the return of Bo (Peter Reckell) on Days of Our Lives, several characters are relieved, including his son Shawn (Brandon Beemer). For a few years, Shawn’s been beating himself up because he shot his dad when Megan’s (Miranda Wilson) brainwashing made Bo attack Hope (Kristian Alfonso). Fast forward two years, and Bo has finally emerged from the resulting coma. Beemer recently opened up about what drives him to give his scenes their all.

It’s been a hot minute

In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Beemer revealed that Shawn was beyond happy to see his father back to normal. Bo had supposedly died of a brain tumor, but it turned out Megan had put him into suspended animation. Revived years later after being cured, Bo woke up but was brainwashed by Megan and went after his wife, Hope. Shawn shot him to save her, so it’s been quite some time since he’s actually interacted with his Dad.

Beemer explained that Shawn realistically hadn’t seen Bo since 2008 when he departed Salem. When Bo was first revived but under the villain’s control, the Days of Our Lives star explained, “That wasn’t his dad that he saw in Greece pointing a gun at his mom. So he hadn’t actually seen his dad in…what? Do the math. It’s been 17 years.” That was a long time for father and son to be separated.

Reckell inspired him

The actor noted that after Shawn apologized to Bo for having shot him, Bo would have none of it. “Shawn just wanted his dad’s forgiveness, because that’s truly where it had to come from,” he explained, further noting that his character wouldn’t be able to forgive himself until Bo did. He happily remarked that Bo “Demanded that Shawn forgive himself and stop beating himself up over what happened, because he did what anybody would have and should have done.”

Bo even noted that Shawn did what he was trained to do, and that he would have taken the same action as his son if the roles were reversed. Beemer explained that Bo’s forgiveness lifted all the weight off of Shawn’s shoulders and was more than he could have expected. “It gave Shawn his moment to heal,” the Days of Our Lives star noted, adding that Shawn could now move on with the business of living his life.

With their reunion scenes, Beemer recalled how wonderful it was to act opposite Reckell again, and remarked that he’d forgotten what a great actor his on-screen Dad’s portrayer is. He was in awe watching Reckell work his magic, and felt he had never been better. “He was at the top of his game. It made me want to work even harder, too,” he gushed.
