Salemites are mourning the loss of John Black on Days of Our Lives. It’s been truly bittersweet as while John died, Bo emerged from his coma and won his battle against sepsis because his fallen friend sacrificed his life to recover the cure. Since then, many characters from the past have returned to pay their respects to the legendary hero, but one was surprisingly absent: Sami Brady. She had an important connection to John, and now her portrayer, Alison Sweeney, has explained why Sami was unable to attend John’s funeral.

It was difficult all around on Days of our Lives

Sweeney took some time to talk with Soaps and stated that Sami would eventually make her way back to Salem to pay her respects. Worried that she might give a spoiler away, she chose her words carefully, explaining that she wasn’t available to make an appearance on set when the funeral was being taped. “They arranged for me to do it a week later, maybe two weeks later,” she said, adding, “I do come in and have scenes about John, but my timing was a little bit off after all of that.”

Sweeney stated that not being there with the rest of the cast was extremely difficult, and even catching the previews were hard on her. The Days of Our Lives star explained that everyone was well aware that when they recorded the scenes, it would be another six months or so before they even aired. Seeing the clips as well as social media comments stirred up her emotions, so, “We’re reliving it, so that’s really hard.”

She enjoyed being there

She also felt that it shouldn’t make a difference if Sami was there with the rest of the characters or not. “Mourning doesn’t always happen [when] everyone gets together on one day,” she stated, further noting that grief is a continuous process. As a result, Sami’s return and connection with Marlena (Deidre Hall), the love of John’s life, was a good moment to share. She was happy to have been able to participate in any fashion, remarking that, “It felt very real.”

Sweeney returned to Days of Our Lives in early April, after EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) was shot and Johnny (Carson) had learned the tragic details of how he was conceived, sending him into a tailspin. Sami was on hand to comfort her son, and at the time, told TV Insider that she was surprised they were revisiting an old story like that. “I liked the idea, but it seemed to me that it was common knowledge,” she remarked, adding, “I never thought about the idea that, right, people wouldn’t have told Sami’s kids.”

We’re looking forward to seeing Sami reconnect with her loved ones and say goodbye to John.
