DAYS gets deep-sixed by Nine

Australian Days of our Lives fans are in for a cliffhanger that they may not like: will their favorite soap continue to air Down Under? The network airing DAYS has decided, after 45 years, to stop broadcasting DAYS.

Days of our Lives has run out of time Down Under. Australia's Nine Network will stop airing the long-running soap at the end of this month.

"We made a commercial decision not to renew Days of our Lives," a Nine spokesperson said in a statement, without revealing what the network's plans were for the DAYS timeslot.

Ratings don't appear to be an issue. Last week, Days of our Lives won its timeslot, averaging 126,000 viewers. The previous week DAYS came in second. There are an estimated 22 million people living in Australia; adjusting for population, DAYS' Australian audience size would equal about 1.8 million viewers in the United States. In the latest Nielsen ratings, 2.3 million Americans were said to have watched at least one episode of Days of our Lives during the first week of April.

This isn't the first time that Nine has ditched an American soap. In 2007, Nine dropped The Young and the Restless after 31 years on the air. It was replaced by a short-live talk show -- something that American viewers might find somewhat ironic.

The backlash from soap fans was quick, and Y&R was quickly snapped up by rival network Foxtel. There's no word yet on whether or not DAYS, which, like Y&R, is produced by Sony Pictures Television, will find a home on Foxtel. Sources say that Sony is continuing to look for a new home for DAYS on Australian television.

For now, the sands will stop on Friday, April 26. Until a resolution, DAYS fans can keep up-to-date with Soap Central's comprehensive Daily Recaps.
