Days of our Lives' Xander is back to causing trouble in Salem this week, and Paul Telfer is opening up about the "scandalous and sensational" material he's often given in the soap world.

Days of our Lives' entertaining duo Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) and Xander (Paul Telfer) are rumored to be giving Salem a serious dose of trouble in the weeks to come, with Xander's shenanigans set to begin Monday, April 29. The character has always been considered a villain, but Telfer spills that his notorious alter ego has gone through a bit of a metamorphosis.

"When I first started getting recognized [by fans], the immediate response was "You're a bad guy!'" he tells Soap Hub. "It has shifted over the last year where they start smiling right away. It's not even a 'love to hate,' but they see me as a cheeky criminal."

Xander's return to Salem this time around is sure to come with as much delightful troublemaking as ever, and Telfer's wish is that it's just as entertaining as some of his previous work -- especially the intriguing scenes he shared with Greg Rikaart (Leo Stark).

"A lot of people were entertained and shocked in a fun way, but there were also people who were turned off by it. They're entitled to their opinions, but it's 2019," he says of Xander and Leo's on-screen shenanigans. "If we're supposed to be doing storylines that are scandalous and sensational, I'm glad that there's still room to do new things... The weirder and more ambiguous we could make Xander's potential decision, the more fun and exciting and goofy [it would be]."
