The intense stand-off between Batman and the Joker in the interrogation room was actually not fully rehearsed. Christopher Nolan had allowed Heath Ledger and Christian Bale considerable scope to ad-lib parts of the scene; it was during this time that Ledger's eerie delivery made him unforgettable.
