A wonderful example of subtle humor and gentle self-deprecation is seen in this quote from The Two Towers. Leading the Fellowship through the Mines of Moria, Ian McKellen's Gandalf the White admits for just a second that he is fallible. Even with all his power and greater wisdom, Gandalf pointedly remarks that even a mighty wizard may get lost. The remark gives an edge to the humor as it reduces the tension of the situation and calms the anxiety of the Fellowship.
