Kal Penn's tenure in House as Dr. Lawrence Kutner came to an abrupt halt when he was offered a job as an associate director in the Obama administration's Office of Public Liaison. Not being able to decline this career opportunity. The writer, realizing he would not be returning, killed his character off by having Kutner commit suicide. Though both Penn and the show's creators made public statements claiming they were amicable, his character on the show was permanently done away with, and Penn went on to pursue a career in politics, eventually returning to acting to star in Designated Survivor and Clarice.
