The film chronicles Lester Burnham, a middle-aged man trying to find meaning in what seems to be a perfectly ordinary but hollow existence. Under the sharp direction of Sam Mendes and the screenplay of Alan Ball, the film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. American Beauty is still considered a cultural touchstone of modern American life and Mendes' debut laid the foundations for a promising career in both film and theater.
