The Crucio curse, also called the Cruciatus Curse, is one of the Unforgivable Curses, it inflicts excruciating pain on a victim without causing harm. It is often applied by dark wizards, like the Death Eaters of Bellatrix Lestrange, as an instrument of torture. The effects of such a curse can be very hurtful because, even at the hands of the most solid wizards, they can break the spirit. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry witnesses it when Voldemort tortures Cedric Diggory to demonstrate the power of the curse in causing psychological and emotional torture.
