The 2025 Gotham Film Awards took place in New York on Monday night. The ceremony brought together multiple independent filmmakers, studio-backed contenders, and notable international figures.

According to enthusiasts, the Gotham Awards generally serve as an early indicator of possible Oscar buzz. However, this year, the event also recognized the independent film scenes alongside relatively larger studios.

The event was organized at Cipriani Wall Street. Nominees, presenters, and guests gathered following the Thanksgiving weekend. The event included multiple competitive awards and honorary tributes. Notably, the Best Feature category included 10 nominees for the first time.

Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another received the top honor of Best Feature at the 2025 Gotham Film Awards. The film had led the nominations with six nods. However, it got only a single win.

On the other hand, the night's biggest winner was Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident, which bagged Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director at the 2025 Gotham Film Awards. Notably, the wins came hours after Panahi was reportedly sentenced in absentia by the Iranian government. During his speech, Panahi stated:

"I would like to dedicate the honor of this award to independent filmmakers in Iran and around the world, filmmakers who keep the camera rolling in silence, without support, and at times by risking everything they have, only with their faith in truth and humanity. I hope that this dedication will be considered a small tribute to all filmmakers who have been deprived of the right to see and to be seen, but continue to create and exist."

He also added:

"I am very happy that I made that decision. If I had not done that back then, I would not have been standing here tonight and I am also happy that I did not cut up my last film, that I did not destroy my last film and I am still here tonight."

Another notable sweep came from My Father's Shadow, which won both of its nominated awards: Breakthrough Director (Akinola Davies Jr.) and Outstanding Lead Performance (Sopé Dìrísù) at the 2025 Gotham Film Awards. The awards placed additional attention on the film amid its growing awards campaign and international festival presence.

Besides the competitive prizes, multiple tributes were awarded to notable individuals at the 2025 Gotham Film Awards. These honors were presented to artists including Noah Baumbach, the cast of Sinners, Luca Guadagnino, Julia Roberts, Guillermo del Toro, Tessa Thompson, Jeremy Allen White, and Hugh Jackman. Baumbach stated:

"I think of my contemporaries, those of us who started in the '90s and who are still going today, people who have inspired me and who have fostered a healthy or unhealthy competition depending on my mood. I think of the younger, exciting filmmakers who are coming up after me, whom I just find annoying, except my wife, but kind of my wife too."

Wunmi Mosaku won Outstanding Supporting Performance for Sinners, and Abou Sangaré won Breakthrough Performer for Souleymane's Story. The documentary award went to My Undesirable Friends: Part I - Last Air in Moscow. Sinners director Ryan Coogler accepted Wunmi Mosaku's award on behalf of her behalf. He shared,

"I was fortunate enough to get into the film industry and, in this film, I explored some of the most personal things I have ever done. I went to the American South for the first time in my life… and the whole world came to meet me."
