Five months ago from today and 18 years after 28 Weeks Later's release, we got a trailer of the third film, 28 Years Later, in the post-apocalyptic horror franchise. Yesterday, Deadline reported that the trailer won the top honor at the Golden Trailer Awards, Best of Show at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. It also won the Best Voice Over and the Most Original Trailer awards.
The trailer, when released, started a buzz among the community about this zombie-like figure, whom fans thought was Cillian Murphy, the original star who first appeared in 28 Days Later (2002). Maybe it's him only. Maybe he got infected. No one can tell at the moment.
Within the first 48 hours, it became the top trailer on YouTube and garnered 10 million views within that time span. Thanks to this viral flame, Sony re-released 28 Days Later on digital platforms. A sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is already in development.
The events in the film will take place almost three decades later, and here's how the synopsis reads according to Sony's official website:
"It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway."
There's more to this synopsis, which you can read on the website itself.
Breakdown of the 28 Years Later trailer
The trailer begins with an aerial view of a town and cuts to the classic 1997 British show for children, Teletubbies, playing on a television, and a panicking woman enters the room while holding on to a girl and asking all the children to stay inside. Then a girl is thrown against a wall near the stairs, though she isn't one of the children sitting in the room.
At the 0:33 mark, the 28 Years Later trailer truly begins, starting with a remote island, again from an aerial view. It is clear that a small community is living there, probably safe from the horrors of what has happened in the franchise before. Men plowing using horses is one indication that the people here have become self-sustained.
Then we see these drawings on a wall, explaining the roles people have assumed there to support this small community. This includes 'Councillor,' 'Seamster,' and more.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is playing a scavenger in the film, is introduced. He is carrying a bow and arrow alongside a kid, who is also armed with such stuff, which indicates the actor is already a pro in this post-apocalyptic world. We see them hunting for something, too, just moments later.
It becomes a bit clear who they are hunting, as a bunch of people infected with the virus are seen running towards them from a distance. But wait for what's coming after this. It seems like new horrors await the audience as a giant is seen running after Taylor-Johnson and the kid.
Ralph Fiennes is also in the film and is seen around the 1:35 mark, where he is seen approaching a mountain of skulls alongside a woman holding a baby and a kid walking alongside her.
That Cillian Murphy-like zombie in the 28 Years Later trailer is in the final moments of the trailer, so hang on.
