Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim expanded Tolkien’s world of LOTR further by recounting the story of the legendary king, Helm Hammerhand of Rohan. The War of the Rohirrim is developed from the appendices of Tolkien’s LOTR novels, with added moments to create a coherent story.

Narrated by Éowyn, the anime fantasy film tells the story of Helm’s daughter, Héra, and how she came into the middle of a horrifying War and the struggles of the Rohirrim. After King Helm accidentally kills Freca, who proposed a marriage between his son, Wulf, and Héra, Wulf attacks Rohan to avenge his father’s death.

The war, reminding us of the battle of Helm’s Deep, which occurred in the same place, is a tale depicting the plight of the people of Rohan. The deadly war introduced us to the resistance of the people of Rohan, and also introduced us to many new warriors that deserve to be mentioned with the other fighters of The Lord of the Rings lore.

In this article, we have listed 5 of the greatest warriors that we have seen in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, some fighting for revenge, some fighting to defend their people.

After his father is killed by King Helm, Wulf flees and later comes back to attack Rohan after becoming the lord of the Dundelings. From killing Héra's brothers to besieging Hornburg (later known as Helm's Deep in The Lord of the Rings), Wulf did not leave any stone unturned in his quest for revenge.

He also becomes a reason for King Helm’s death, making him one of the fiercest and remorseless fighters in the LOTR lore.

4) Olwyn

This non-canonical character played an important role in The Lord of the Rings anime film and was a guardian and aunt of Héra. Other than that, she was also one of the shield maidens of Rohan, representing the excellent female fighters of Rohan.

She helped in defending Rohan during the War and fought side by side with Héra. Not only that, but Olwyn also went to rescue Héra from Isengard with Fréaláf. When Wulf attacked Edoras, Olwyn was also one of the people who helped the people get away from the city to survive Wulf's army. Olwyn and Héra depict the fearlessness of the shield maidens of Rohan, which we also encountered in the last The Lord of the Rings film when Éowyn participated in the Battle of Pelennor hundreds of years later in the War of the Ring.

3) Fréaláf Hildeson

The future king of Rohan in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Fréaláf, was also Héra’s cousin. As per the film, Fréaláf was a sensible leader who tried to avoid war by suggesting to evacuate Edoras, but was deemed a coward by his uncle, King Helm.

However, Fréaláf showed his skills and courage by rescuing Héra from Isengard, where she was locked up after being kidnapped by the Dunlendings and General Targg. He also comes back to aid Hornburg after Helm’s death to help Héra in defending the Rohirrim after most of her family is killed.

2) King Helm Hammerhand

One of the legendary kings of Rohan, introduced in The Lord of the Rings anime film, was King Helm. He got his nickname, Hammerhand, due to the brute strength of his fists, which he also shows in the film by accidentally killing Freca with only his fists.

Known for his fierceness, Helm stood his ground against Wulf and his army of wild tribes until the end, giving his daughter a chance to escape Hornburg. After discovering his son, Haleth’s death, and later encountering Hama’s death, Helm, now broken and bereaved, still fights until his last breath, depicting why he was regarded as one of the most fearsome warriors of Rohan.

1) Héra

Héra might not be named or documented well in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels, which allowed the creators of the film to expand the lore of the popular fantasy series and create a female warrior, who the shield maiden of Rohan respected and inspired to be. A war started due to her father refusing a marriage between her and Wulf, she became the centerpiece who finally managed to kill Wulf and end the war.

Described as an adventure-loving individual, she showed her skills by accompanying her father in killing a troll and several other members of Wulf’s army. In the end, she also killed Wulf by choking him to death, after he attacked her, depicting her exceptional quick thinking and agility, that helped her gain the upperhand and kill the lord of Dunlendings.
