You don't simply watch superhero movies because they have superpowers or they have built a super-powerful suit. It's about the story, character development, and many more things that make a superhero film a superhero film. At the end of the day, they are all stories. And if not done right, then they are bound to sting in the eyes.

We have seen some great stories flying by, and they've got some plot twists that had us thinking what in the Earth 616 did we just see? But some of them were just, let's say, 'meh,' and didn't need to be in the story at all.

So, keeping all that in mind, we came up with a list of the 5 best plot twists in superhero movies and the 5 worst ones. Though it doesn't have to be stopped here in this list, feel free to share your picks after you've finished reading this. So, let's get on with it.

5 best plot twists in superhero movies

5. Avengers: Endgame

Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrifice as he snatched the Infinity Stones from Thanos was a major plot twist. Certainly, no one was hoping to see our favorite superhero die at the Infinity Saga's conclusion.

4. The Dark Knight Rises

Everyone thought that this was the end of Batman and Gotham as Bane (Tom Hardy) overtook the city. But then the fiery symbol appeared, and faith was restored as the caped crusader returned to save the city for the final time in Christopher Nolan's trilogy.

3. Spider-Man: No Way Home

Everyone had a feeling that they would see this plot twist in the Marvel film, the arrival of two Spider-men, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Everything was sorted, and the former's reunion with Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) was really heartwarming.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

One of the biggest plot twists in superhero movies came with this one, as Bucky (Sebastian Stan) was revealed to be the Winter Soldier. Even Cap (Chris Evans) couldn't believe his eyes.

1. The Dark Knight

No one thought in that tense sequence that the Joker (Heath Ledger) had swapped Harvey's (Aaron Eckhart) and Rachel's (Maggie Gyllenhaal) places. Who thought that he would give rise to a villain, that too from a man that the city saw as a hero? It was then we felt, "you either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

5 worst plot twists in superhero movies

5. The Flash

The Flash is still considered one of the worst superhero movies because of the CGI in it. But the antagonist was a darker version of Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) only. The film should've used better versions like Reverse Flash and all, to make it more interesting.

4. Wonder Woman 1984

Kristen Wiig's Barbara is revealed to be a major villain in the DC film. But her wish to become an apex predator was a disappointing plot twist, as her first wish to be like Diana was more in line if she remained that way and fought another supervillain alongside the Amazonian.

3. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

This isn't just one of the worst plot twists in superhero movies, but also a mystery. How did Scott Lang stand up to Jonathan Major's bulky Kang the Conqueror in hand-to-hand combat? That didn't really fit well. That was not natural, in fact.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Kurt Russell played Ego, father of Star Lord (Chris Pratt) in the film, who, in a major plot twist, turns out to be the one who killed Quill's mother, turning him into a fully fledged villain. Though there was always something fishy about him, it didn't come as a surprise.

1. Iron Man 3

We'll end the list with one of the worst plot twists that comes from one of the best superhero movies, which is Iron Man 3. Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery was revealed to be a mere actor, which stole the entire buildup of his character in the film.
