Materialists is not just any other movie about love and love triangles. It has been directed in much detail and reveals a lot about the philosophy that is behind the movie. One of the most intriguing scenes in Materialists happens early on in the movie when Harry sees Lucy at his brother’s wedding and approaches her. The scene has been enigmatically shot and reveals the deeper layers of the film along with Harry’s persona and Lucy’s ideology. The scene is shot like two theater actors having a conversation, and Harry subtly throws off the name tag to sit next to Lucy at the dinner table. Harry carries himself in a calm and suave manner in the scene, and that defines his persona throughout the film. He also delivers a monologue about how Lucy is amazing at her job, and therefore he is intrigued by the manner in which she handles her profession. The movie reveals that Harry is drawn to people who are dedicated to their jobs and are logical. The scene is also the first scene in the movie where viewers get to fully see the characters of Harry and Lucy, and they also get to know about Lucy’s principles as a matchmaker. The scene is subtly intimate, as there is flirtation yet conversation about a recruitment. Harry believes that love is difficult, yet Lucy believes that it is easy, as it can happen anytime in one’s life. Therefore, the scene is an important one in the Materialists, as it highlights both Harry’s and Lucy’s personas.

When Harry and Lucy begin seeing each other in Materialists, there is a lot of spark and undeniable chemistry. However, underneath all the passion, there is also a meaningful reason as to why Harry is attracted to Lucy. On one of their dates, Harry reveals why he likes Lucy because Lucy has always been intrigued as to why a billionaire is interested in her, who comes from the working class, even though he can get anyone he wants. Harry reveals his views towards companionship, friendship, and love as he mentions to her that he likes the manner in which Lucy looks at the world. Lucy believes in logic and sees everything in mathematical terms. Yet, she has an emotional side to her as well and believes in the whimsical quality of love. While the scene reveals Lucy’s personality through Harry’s eyes, it also explores Harry’s deep-seated need to find a partner who has the same interests as him, and Harry therefore presents himself as a stylish yet grounded and authentic character. Even though he is a billionaire, he is real, humble, and has the same interests in love as anyone else. Harry also mentions that he wants someone who is better than him, and Lucy is therefore perfect in his eyes. Harry mentions that Lucy’s way of looking at things intrigues him and he can learn a lot from her. The scene delves deeper into Harry’s personality in Materialists and presents him as a complex and layered character.

While Harry from Materialists has many complex and layered moments in the movie, there are also some jaw-dropping moments that truly define the title of the movie. In one of the scenes, Harry takes Lucy to his Tribeca penthouse, and it is the first time that Lucy truly understands the extent of Harry’s wealth and influence. The scene is important not just because it highlights the material aspect of love and Harry’s influential lifestyle but also because Harry and Lucy share an intimate moment together. While Lucy is in awe over Harry’s wealthy lifestyle, Harry is revealed to be grounded and without any airs. He is not arrogant and treats Lucy with respect. Harry is therefore one of the most enigmatic characters in the movie. He knows how to carry himself, and even without throwing any airs, he has an inspiring and magnetic influence on others. The scene from Materialists also reveals that after Harry and Lucy get intimate, Lucy wakes up the next morning at his penthouse, and she finds Harry already awake and speaking on the phone. Yet, he does not treat his intimate moment with Lucy as a one-night stand and continues to treat her as an equal and with empathy. Without thinking, Harry hands over the keys to his penthouse to Lucy. This reveals that he knows whom to trust, and when he finds someone close and trustworthy, he knows how to treat them. Even though Harry’s penthouse is worth billions, he swiftly hands over the keys to Lucy.

4. When Harry went to watch a play with Lucy

Another instance in Materialists that highlights the humbleness of Harry is that he goes to watch a play with Lucy that stars John, who is Lucy’s ex. Even though Harry doesn’t know their history, he knows that Lucy and John are good friends, and he does not have any qualms about going to the play with her. Even though Harry is a billionaire, he is willing to go to places with Lucy because it means a lot to her. There is a strong commentary about class alongside love in Materialists, and scenes like this drive home the point that even though Harry comes from the privileged class, he is able to blur the lines and find companionship in a character like Lucy, who comes from the working class. The instance regarding the play also cements the fact that Harry is a “unicorn” in the world of dating, a term that Lucy uses several times in the movie to denote Harry. A unicorn is an imaginary creature, and Lucy is awestruck by the genial nature of the billionaire Harry, who is almost perfect and therefore seems like someone who is outside of reality. In a movie like Materialists that is so focused on class and love, scenes like this are an important highlighter of Harry’s character.

5. When Harry takes Lucy to fancy restaurants

Sometimes the best test to judge a person is to observe how a person treats people who are less privileged than them. Therefore, when Harry takes Lucy to fancy and expensive restaurants in Materialists, he makes sure to acknowledge the work that the staff are doing and is grounded and humble. He does not treat people from other classes as inferiors and instead knows how to respect everyone. Lucy is even awestruck about the fact that Harry is not boastful about his wealth and success. Even though Lucy tries to read Harry throughout the movie and is unable to believe that a person so successful and rich could be this down-to-earth, the fact is that Harry is the same person on the outside as he is on the inside. Even though Harry is not present throughout the entire length of the movie and is there in a few scenes, he leaves a deep impact upon the entire movie. Even though most of the moments where Harry is present in Materialists are also scenes that are shrouded in wealth and materialism, Harry stands apart as a gentleman who is unaffected by the wealth around him and is grounded and respectful.

Perhaps one of the most important and also one of the best moments regarding Henry in Materialists is when he has a heart-to-heart conversation with Lucy about his past. While most of the scenes between Harry and Lucy focus on their intimacy and the grand lifestyle that Harry offers to Lucy, there is an important scene that is stripped bare of all glitter and is raw and real. One night, Lucy spots wounds on Harry’s legs as she sleeps next to him. Intrigued, she touches the wound, and Harry wakes up. While Lucy hesitates to say anything and Harry gets up to go to the kitchen, the two begin to have an authentic conversation over there. The scene is crucial because Harry finally tells Lucy about his past and reveals that he and his brother got a surgery done to increase their height. The emotions run high in this scene from Materialists, and it reveals that Harry wasn’t always a unicorn. The scene is important on another level as it highlights the nature of dating in modern times, as Harry states that women didn’t even look at him when he was 5’6”. It was after the surgery that he became more confident and women started approaching him. Therefore, the scene is also a commentary about the dating scene. Lastly, this is also the scene where Lucy realizes that she and Harry are not really in love with each other, and they decide to part ways. Therefore, this scene is extremely important and reveals Harry’s deepest parts.
