A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, the latest movie that comes with the star power of Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, was nothing like its title if we look at its reception.
Add the tanked box office numbers on top of that, and the matter will become worse. The film, made on a $45 million budget, opened with just $3.5 million at the domestic box office.
Its sales in international markets were better, where it collected $4.5 million, taking the overall tally to $8 million. It was released on September 19, 2025, and made $1.4 million on day one, $1.2 million the following day, and just $855k on September 21. Taking these falling numbers into account, they are only expected to go further down in the days to come.
When we look at its reception, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is currently sitting with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 37%, according to its Tomatometer. The Popcornmeter was better than that, 59%, but that wasn't enough to prevent the popcorn bucket from falling.
As of this writing, the review aggregator website's consensus for the film reads,
"Too solemn to have much fun with its high concept while also too saccharine for its wistful themes to resonate, this well-meaning odyssey never quite lives up to its title."
Given the poor opening, it's now hard to say that the film will turn profitable from this stage. As Variety notes, the critics' reception is likely to hurt word-of-mouth, which worsens the matter again.
Who is actually having a big bold beautiful journey this weekend?

The September weekend had a few titles that didn't sit well with both the audiences and critics. Yet, the latest Jordan Peele release, Him, still managed to score big at the domestic box office as it opened with $13.5 million. International markets weren't as responsive, as it has just picked up $362k from there by now. The film was released on the same day as A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
Next, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which made $12.9 million on the weekend and pushed its domestic tally to $151.1 million. This is a drastic decline from its opening weekend, where the final chapter of The Conjuring subseries saw a healthy $84 million collection. Looking at its global tally, it is close to $400 million now, which also means that it has already turned a profit, as it was made on a $55 million budget.
While these two films, and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, were poorly received by the critics and the audiences, there was still a film that has become a global phenomenon. On the third this weekend was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie - Infinity Castle, which made $11.8 million at the US domestic box office. It currently sits with a healthy $555 million at the global box office.
Other movies that made it to the top ten this weekend at the domestic box office include The Long Walk ($6.3 million), rereleased Toy Story ($1.4 million), Weapons ($1.2 million), and more.
