The Empire magazine has revealed a new, exclusive look into the world of The Lost Bus, an upcoming survival drama film directed by Paul Greengrass, starring Matthew McConaughey (True Detective) and America Ferrera (Barbie).

Greengrass' The Lost Bus offers a raw and visceral look into a deadly, real-life tragedy. It centers around the devastating wildfire in 2018 in the town of Paradise, California. The inferno ravaged the nearby area and led to horrifying casualties and over 1800 homes being destroyed. The incident offered a brutal reminder of the fragility of life.

As the fires kept rising across the town, Kevin McKay, a school bus driver, decided to help a class of over 20 children with their dedicated schoolteacher, Mary Ludwig. That led them on a precarious and uncertain journey down the road, consumed by fire. Greengrass's film aims to capture the essence of their bravery and resilience.

Paul Greengrass has been behind some of the most striking thrillers to have come out of Hollywood. He was the directorial voice of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, which offered a DNA for the slick, spycraft and dramas. United 93 showed him dealing with a plane hijack incident, while Captain Philips followed a ship hijack incident.

No matter what the situation, the filmmaker stayed true to his grounded approach to offer a close-to-life experience of actual incidents. He worked similarly on The Lost Bus to make it all seem real.

During a conversation with Empire magazine, Greengrass revealed his initial plans to use vast digital screens to capture the horrors of the deadly fires, which didn't translate too well. That's why he decided to use a more practical approach, using safe gas burners for fire while shooting it in the golden hours.

“I remember saying to Matthew and America, ‘You’re just going to have to trust me. The beauty of this is it’ll make you feel like you’ve got the intensity of a once-only live performance, which will give an edge to what you’re doing, but we’ll have the safety net of a lot of preparation.'" Greengrass told Empire.

He elaborated further, saying,

“We basically had to shoot a day’s work in an hour, but Matthew and America ran with it. There comes a moment in any film when you know your actors have got it, then all you’ve got to do is harvest their riches.”

The newly released look into The Lost Bus shows Matthew McConaughey as Kevin McKay behind the wheel, contemplating something. America Ferrera stands aside as Mary Ludwig, just as stumped by what lies in their journey. Through a simple image, the actors offer an idea of the monumental stakes lying in front of their characters as they embark on a mission to save 22 children.

Greengrass has written the film's screenplay with the Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. Besides writing, Ingelsby is also attached to this feature project as a key producer, working alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Gregory Goodman, and Blumhouse Productions' Jason Blum.

The Lost Bus will have its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, ahead of its limited theatrical release in the US on September 19. It will eventually be available to stream on Apple TV+ from October 3.
