Fear Street: Prom Queen was released on May 23, 2025, on Netflix. The slasher film is directed by Matt Palmer, who co-wrote it with Donald McLeary. The fourth entry in the Fear Street series, the film is an adaptation of the 1992 novel The Prom Queen, which was penned by R. L. Stine.
The film came out recently, and it appears that it has not been able to impress fans who are disappointed by this sequel. People took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their views on the film. Many felt that several actors in the film, despite being talented, were perceived as being underutilized or given plot points that didn't go anywhere. One of them stated that it's "just a mess on almost every level."
Fear Street: Prom Queen fails to impress viewers
Fans are disappointed by the recently released slasher film Fear Street: Prom Queen, with people taking to X to share their views.
One user wrote,
"#FearStreetPromQueen is quite bad, very bad even. Just a mess on almost every level. If you love the original trilogy like me, you’ll find yourself incredible disappointed in this slog. Intensely uninteresting and only left me fearing another Fear Street as bad as this one."
Another user stated that it's not necessarily the best or original.
"Fear Street: Prom Queen isn't necessarily the best or even the most original slasher movie. But it does provide a nice gateway for people to get into the genre, just like the Fear Street books do. The kills are good, and the soundtrack is hot fire. #FearStreetPromQueen"
A few netizens expressed their disappointment over how the makers wasted the potential of two characters in the film, including Melisa.
"#FearStreetPromQueen Your telling me you created these two amazing characters. And didn't give either one of them an amazing chase scene or more screen time. Especially Melissa. She deserved so much better." One wrote.
"The fact Christy only had her 3 or 4 minutes of camera time and died is unbelievable….like what. And the fact I thought she was gone turn around and duck but naww she stayed turned around..." another complained.
"Christy Renault they made you a baddie and didn't even let you get some cardio girl i am so pissed off #FearStreetPromQueen," a netizen pointed out.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Matt Palmer said that the look of the main killer was inspired by the 1976 film Alice, Sweet Alice. He said,
“We were like, ‘What color of jacket we put against the red lockers?’ We looked at yellow, but that felt a bit too on the nose, because Alice, Sweet Alice already done that. We tried blue. And then one of our concept artists came back with red on red, which we hadn’t thought of because we were looking for something that wasn’t red, and it was like, ‘Oh, my God! That looks awesome!’"
