"A story that feels like it’s honoring the experience": Resident Evil director shares how the reboot will follow in the footsteps of the OG games

The problem with the original Resident Evil movies is that they don't feel like the same universe we saw in the video games. Animated ones are slightly better in comparison, but still, the games were something different. We got a reboot in 2021, Welcome to Raccoon City, but that too failed to impress.

Now another reboot is in development, with Barbarian (2022) director Zach Cregger directing and writing it. Recently, he sat down with ComicBook, who picked his brain. During the chat, he answered that it is sure to get the fans excited. He said:

"I love the games. I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games. I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love….I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip."

His 2022 film, Barbarian, was a critical and commercial success, getting a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and earning $45.3 million against a $4–4.5 million budget. Cregger is also coming up with another horror flick, Weapons, scheduled for August 8, 2025, release.

Are we finally getting Leon as the main protagonist in a Resident Evil film?

Leon S. Kennedy is arguably the most beloved character in the entire Resident Evil franchise. And putting him in the driving seat is a sure shot to get the fans flocking into theaters.

As of this writing, Zach Cregger's reboot doesn't have a plot, but given his comment, it looks like he might try to give the character much-needed screen time in his film. If Leon turns out to be the protagonist, then we may also speculate about the elements from the 2005 survival horror game, Resident Evil 4, which is considered the best game in the franchise.

It is connected to the series, but it can be considered a standalone game with its own story. There, we see him on a rescue mission where he is saving Ashley Graham, daughter of the United States' President. It won multiple Game of the Year awards and became the Best-Selling Survival Horror Game according to the Guinness Book of Records.

The Guinness Book of Records also recognizes him as one of the most iconic video game characters, which is also a reason to see him as a leading protagonist in a movie. Apart from Resident Evil 4, he has appeared in RE2 and RE6. Additionally, the character has also appeared in movies. In the fifth installment of the Mila Jovovich-led film series, Retribution (2012), he appears as a supporting character.

Leon also appeared in a major role in the animated film, Degeneration (2008), and then returned in its sequels Damnation (2012) and Vendetta (2017) alongside characters like Chris Redfield, Rebecca Chambers, and more.

Currently, the IMDb listing of Zach Cregger's untitled Resident Evil reboot shows The Walking Dead's Austin Abrams as the only actor on the list. That too is unknown at the moment.
