Netflix has hit us with yet another crime thriller. It's called A Widow’s Game. It's a Spanish film that is inspired by real-life events that took place in 2017. Here is the synopsis to give you a gist of what's in the film:
In August 2017, a dead body is found in a parking lot in Valencia, Spain, with several stab wounds — and everything uncovered from then on points to a crime of passion. The victim is Arturo Ferrer Puig, who’d been married to a sweet young woman named Maje (Baquero) for under a year. As veteran homicide detective Eva (Machi) pursues the case, she slowly realizes Maje’s story just doesn’t add up.
Ivana Baquero, Tristan Ulloa, Carmen Machi, and more star in A Widow’s Game. As of now, we might not see it in the top movies chart of the platform, but that may change soon.
The true story of A Widow’s Game

Ivana Baquero is Maje in A Widow’s Game. Maje's husband was Antonio Navarro Cerdan, portrayed by Alex Gadea in the film, who was found dead on August 16, 2017. At first, it wasn't very clear what the situation was and it was thought of as a robbery, but nothing was stolen.
It turns out that this was a carefully planned scheme by his wife, Maje, and her lover, Salvador Rodrigo Lapiedra (Tristan Ulloa in A Widow’s Game). He wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but that wouldn't have been possible as long as Antonio was alive.
Of course, anyone would act innocent after committing a crime but Maje's behavior after what happened to Antonio wasn't very convincing. Her emotional response didn't really go hand in hand for investigators, according to the reports associated with the case.
While Maje didn't commit the crime, she was equally complicit. She was not at home when her lover did all of this, and it was upon her instruction that he committed the murder. Later, the murder weapon was discarded, but was eventually found by the investigators.

In light of all the evidence, Maje and Salvador were arrested. As Euro Weekly News reports in its story, Maje was given a sentence of 22 years, and Antonio was given 17 years. In addition to that, they needed to pay €250k ($284k at the moment) to Antonio's family.
There's also a recording at the end of A Widow’s Game where we can hear Salvador saying that,
"In my previous statement, I said it was all my idea. But it was both of us."
Moreover, Salvador also made claims that she presented herself as her husband's victim, who, according to her, used to beat her.
While all of this sent them both to prison, Maje began another relationship while serving her sentence and even had a baby.
