Prince Harry recently revealed that his life with the royal family was like the TV show Downton Abbey.

During his speech at the British-American Business Council’s 65th Annual Christmas Luncheon in Santa Monica, California on December 5, the Duke of Sussex said:

“People sometimes ask if growing up with the royal family was a bit like [show creator] Julian's [Fellowes] Downton Abbey. Yeah, but only one of those worlds is filled with drama, intrigue, elaborate dinners [and] marriages to Americans — and the other is a TV show."

Complete timeline of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit from royal life

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle went on a hiatus from royal duties for six weeks in 2019. They spent their holidays in Canada, skipping the annual family Christmas at Sandringham. During that time, she was in the postpartum period following the birth of their son Archie in May that year.

They began their exit from royal life with a surprise announcement in 2020. The Sun reported that the couple wanted to become financially independent by stepping back as “senior” members of the royal family.

Despite dropping his duties as a working royal, Harry remains a “prince” and the fifth in line to the throne. The couple kept their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles but are no longer addressed as His or Her Royal Highness.

The Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement that Prince Harry and Markle won’t be returning to their royal roles. It read:

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family. Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.”

In March 2020, Prince Harry and Markle moved to their friend Tyler Perry’s house in Beverly Hills, along with their son, Archie. An insider told People magazine at that time:

“This is what Meghan and Harry have always wanted — to create their own life. It's got to feel like an immense relief to get out of the U.K. and go down their own path.”

In July of the same year, Prince Harry and his wife purchased a $14 million nine-bedroom mansion in Montecito. A source told People magazine:

“They were craving a smaller community and a slower pace—Montecito is very mellow, a charming little town and the Santa Barbara [area] offers an ideal lifestyle that they're looking forward to.”

In February 2021, they announced that they would not return to their former roles as senior working royals, as their one-year probationary period came to an end. They were also expecting their second child, Lilibet that time. Buckingham Palace confirmed their decision with Queen Elizabeth II stating sadness over their choice. The Palace released a short statement, which read:

“While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family.”

They returned to the UK in 2022 to attend Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. Later that year, in September, they were spotted at the Queen’s funeral, alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton.

In November of the same year, the couple released their Netflix docuseries titled Harry & Meghan, where they opened up about their early relationship and their royal life behind the scenes.

In March 2023, they were evicted from their Frogmore cottage. The decision was surprising for the couple as they utilized the place while visiting the U.K. Prince Harry was then spotted attending the coronation of his father, King Charles in May.

In September 2024, the couple changed their official residence from the U.K. to the U.S. They no longer have an official U.K. residence.
