Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story is an American horror film written and directed by Natasha Kermani. It's an adaptation of Joe Hill's short story by the same name. Its official plot synopsis reads:
"Max and Rudy Van Helsing have spent their lives under the strict and overprotective rule of their father, Abraham. Unaware of his dark past, they struggle to understand his paranoia and increasingly erratic behavior. But when they begin to uncover the violent truths behind their father’s history with Dracula, their world unravels, forcing them to confront the terrifying legacy they were never meant to inherit."
The film revolves around the family of Abraham Van Helsing, who was originally a part of Bram Stoker's classic gothic horror novel. It premiered at the Overlook Film Festival in April 2025, ahead of its wider release by Shudder in July. Its cast includes Titus Welliver, Jocelin Donahue, Brady Hepner, Judah Mackey, and more.
The ending of Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story reveals that the villain in the family's life is Abraham and not a vampire lurking in the dark. Let's analyse the root cause behind Abraham's lies and deception.

What is Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story from Shudder about?

Set in the early 20th century, Abraham (Titus Welliver) and Mina (Jocelin Donahue) live somewhere on a farmland with their two sons, Max (Brady Hepner) and Rudy (Judah Mackey). As the family patriarch, Abraham keeps them under his control by making them scared of being around the local railroad workers.
Max and Rudy stay under Abraham's influence until they see their mother sick and bedridden. Since an encounter with an evil entity, she starts seeing its presence around her. The sons can barely comprehend anything she says. Despite Abraham's constant aid, her condition keeps getting worse, leading to her tragic death.

Even blood transfusion cannot save her. While taking her last breaths, she reveals the monster that led her on this path. It's not an evil vampire lurking in the dark. Instead, it is Abraham who brought her to that tragic fate. Her confession leads Max and Rudy to doubt their father's intentions behind protecting them.
Soon, the sons walk into their father's secret room to see why he doesn't let them enter the space. They find a woman locked inside the basement. She looks tired and tortured, which affirms Max's suspicions about their father. He informs family friend Elsie (Aurora Perineau), who doesn't trust him until it's too late.
What happens at the end of Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story?

The sons start putting the pieces of the puzzle together to accept their mother's last words as the truth. Max realizes how Abraham forces them to do things against their will. He recalls how Abraham's past associate, Arthur, was also forced to see his love, Lucy, die in front of his eyes, to get rid of the evil that consumed her.
Abraham implied that the vampires are the boogeymen in their lives to grow his influence. In reality, he was purely driven by his savior complex. He gaslighted Mina into believing her life is worth something only if he is not influenced by the outside world. It ties into the orthodox sexist notions that entrap women to make him feel self-important.
Max sees behind Abraham's mask and understands his true, monstrous intentions. So, toward the end of Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story, Max and Rudy grow past their father's indoctrination, leading to Abraham's death. Rudy stabs Abraham when he sees his evil side unleashed on Elsie. Then, Max kills Abraham to stop anyone else from getting hurt.
The ending of Abraham's Boys: A Dracula Story doesn't reveal whether Max follows his father's evil path. Abraham implies that Max will do so when he becomes a provider. However, Max seems resolute not to repeat his grave mistakes. So, the film ultimately leaves it up to us to decide what path Max will choose.
