Grown Ups is a comedy film that was released in 2010 and ended up becoming a commercial success, despite receiving mixed to negative reviews. It grossed $272.2 million at the box office and was followed by a sequel titled Grown Ups 2 that came out in 2013.
Similar to the first film, the sequel was a commercial success despite unfavorable critical feedback. Recently, Kevin James, who has featured in the franchise, spoke about a potential third installment. Hinting at a sequel, the actor said,
"I think it's happening."
Let us look into the details of what Kevin has said about the sequel.
Kevin James talks about the Grown Ups sequel
Recently, actor Kevin James spoke to The Direct about a potential third installment of Grown Ups. He said,
"I think there have been. And I think, yeah, I think you can keep hope alive. I can say that. I would keep a lot of hope alive. And I think it's happening—something's happening. I can say that."
While the actor has not confirmed anything yet, his comments surely hint at the possibility of a third installment. It is possible that the film might be in the initial stage of scripting. Given the deal Adam Sandler has with Netflix, it won't be a surprise if Grown Ups 3 releases directly on streaming.
More about the Grown Ups franchise
The Grown Ups franchise began with the first film, which was directed by Dennis Dugan. It was written by Adam Sandler, Tim Herlihy, and Fred Wolf; Sandler also produced it with Jack Giarraputo. The film revolves around the reunion of five high school friends after the demise of their coach. The cast members include Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Salma Hayek.
Its sequel was released on July 12, 2013, by Sony Pictures Releasing. Dugan returned as the director, while Sandler wrote the script with Wolf and Tim Herlihy. It revolves around Lenny Feder (played by Sandler), who returns to his hometown with his family. Much of the cast from the first film reprised their respective roles.
Back in 2010, Sandler spoke to Collider about writing the first film. He said that he kept the cast in mind during the writing stage.
"Yes, I did. Me and Fred Wolf wrote the movie. The whole idea was about putting together old friends that get to hang out for a weekend. These guys are my old friends, so it made total sense. I’m glad they said yes to it."
He also spoke about actors improvising during the shoot.
"There was a lot of ad-libbing and a lot of jokes. I wasn’t shocked by anybody, but everybody who watches the movie loves Spade. I think they’re used to every one of us doing good work and not used to David doing anything good."
Amid a sea of sequels, remakes, and nostalgia projects, we can expect a third installment of this commercially successful franchise. Viewers should hopefully expect some official confirmation soon.
