The Owens sisters are officially returning for another magical adventure in Practical Magic 2, nearly three decades after the original film hit theaters. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are on board to reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel, slated for a September 2026 release.
Now, The Kissing Booth star Joey King is in talks for a role in the sequel. The Hollywood Reporter states that she is being cast as one of Sally’s (Bullock) daughters, who realizes the truth about their dark powers, which leads them into a crisis.
Warner Bros. Pictures recently announced the sequel with a new magic spell in a brief teaser. It features only a voice and text, saying:
“Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix. Sept. 18, 2026.”
Shortly after, during the premiere of Nine Perfect Strangers, Nicole Kidman spoke about Practical Magic 2 and whether a sequel had always been on their minds. She told Variety:
“When we were making it, we definitely did. We’re so excited. Yes, yes, beyond excited. You heard our spell. We put out our spell already.”
What was Practical Magic about?
Practical Magic stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as Sally and Gillian, two sisters who try to fight off a curse that kills anyone they fall in love with. It traces the lineage of a long line of witches and places it in a cozy suburban setting with a dark undercurrent. Amid its supernatural tones, it handled themes of female empowerment and sisterhood in its dramatic setting.
The original film was based on Alice Hoffman’s book of the same name. Robin Swicord co-wrote the screenplay with Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks. After Hours star Griffin Dunne served as the director.
The film was met with a less-than-favorable reception upon its release in 1998 but has since gained a cult following. So, the announcement for Practical Magic 2 was met with a lot of fanfare, with fans excited to see Kidman and Bullock back in action as the sisters casting another spell with their family.
What do we know about Practical Magic 2?
The plot for Practical Magic 2 is still under wraps, but the script is being written by the original film’s co-writer Akiva Goldsman, along with Georgia Pritchett. Goldsman is widely known for his Oscar-winning script for A Beautiful Mind. He has also handled supernatural elements in films like Constantine (2005) and Winter’s Tale (2014). Pritchett is known for her work on shows like Succession, Veep, and The Shrink Next Door.
Practical Magic 2 will be directed by Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier, who has previously worked with both stars—Nicole Kidman in The Perfect Couple and Sandra Bullock in Bird Box.
In addition to reprising their roles, Bullock and Kidman will also co-produce Practical Magic 2 with Denise Di Novi, who also worked on the original. The film is expected to begin filming in London in late summer. It is anticipated to revolve around another chapter from Alice Hoffman’s books.
