Freakier Friday is a sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday, and it had its world premiere at LA's El Capitan Theatre on July 22, 2025. The film will be released theatrically on August 8 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Here is the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:

"Years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover lightning might indeed strike twice."

Ahead of its theatrical release, one of the leading ladies of the film, Lindsay Lohan, spoke about how she broke out of teen roles and made a comeback to acting.

Ahead of the release of Freakier Friday, the film's star Lindsay Lohan gave an interview to The Times UK, where she was asked about getting typecast in teen roles. She replied, saying,

“Yeah, I do. I was so thrilled to work on A Prairie Home Companion, and yet even today I have to fight for stuff that is like that, which is frustrating. Because, well, you know me as this, but you also know I can do that.

She continued about breaking out of such roles.

"So let me! Give me the chance. I have to break that cycle and open doors to something else, leaving people no choice. And in due time, if Martin Scorsese reaches out, I’m not going to say no.”

In the same interview, the actress said that she lost excitement in the mid-2000s, after which she decided to take a break from acting. Lohan is now back on screen and doesn't want to get pigeon-holed into similar roles.

In a May interview with Elle, Lohan said that she does not want to continue doing romcoms for Netflix. Having done three films in that genre with the streamer, Lohan said:

“I love making movies for that reason, for people to escape and find something that they can take into their own life and realize everything’s going to be okay. But with Netflix, I was like, ‘Okay, now we need to be thinking about other stuff.’ I can’t do movies like these forever.”

Meanwhile, her upcoming film Freakier Friday has her reprising the role of Anna Coleman. The original film itself was an adaptation of the namesake 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers. It is directed by Nisha Ganatra, while Jordan Weiss and Elyse Hollander wrote the story. Weiss also wrote the screenplay. Besides Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis is also reprising her role as Tess Coleman from the 2003 version.

Here's a list of its cast members:

  • Jamie Lee Curtis as Tess Coleman
  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Ella
  • Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman
  • Chad Michael Murray as Jake
  • Julia Butters as Harper Coleman
  • Sophia Hammons as Lily Davies
  • Manny Jacinto as Eric Davies
  • Mark Harmon as Ryan

Curtis has also produced the film with Kristin Burr and Andrew Gunn.

Freakier Friday will release on August 8, 2025.
