Alice in Wonderland is a fantasy novel by Lewis Carroll that has been adapted across various media. The trippy storyline follows the titular girl who goes on an adventure and experiences bizarre things.

The children's novel was first published in 1865, and it's noted by critics as an example of a genre called literary nonsense. Over the years, there have been numerous adaptations of Carroll's book, including the 1951 Disney version and Tim Burton's 2010 live-action movie.

Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter will be starring in a musical film based on the same novel. The project has been greenlit at Universal Pictures. Let's explore all the details that we can gather about this upcoming film.

Sabrina Carpenter to star in Alice in Wonderland musical film

Sabrina Carpenter will be making her feature film acting debut with the musical version of Alice in Wonderland. She will also be producing the project, while Universal Pictures will be backing it. Lorene Scafaria will be writing and directing the film. It will be an adaptation of Lewis Carroll's namesake novel, which is available in the public domain.

The latest Alice in Wonderland project is yet to get an official title. Marc Platt will be co-producing it under his banner of Marc Platt Productions, along with Elysa Koplovitz Dutton and Leslie Morgenstein for Alloy Entertainment. Carpenter has appeared in titles like Tall Girl (for Netflix) and The Hate U Give. But so far, she has focused more on her musical career.

Last week, the Espresso singer bagged six nominations for the Grammy Awards for her studio album titled Man's Best Friend. Variety has confirmed that she approached the studio back in 2024. Scafaria joined the title after the project was developed. Her directorial credits include I Love L.A., certain episodes of HBO's Succession, Hustlers, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and The Meddler.

Earlier, Carpenter's production company had sent a pitch for an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland to Netflix back in 2020. This was when she was an up-and-coming artist and was prior to her global success.

In a 2022 interview, Carpenter called Alice one of her favorite characters and a dream role. Alice in Wonderland has been adapted several times across the globe, with the most recent one being a Japanese anime version called Dive in Wonderland.

In a 2018 interview with Hero Magazine, Carpenter spoke about her acting aspirations.

"I remember vividly as a child watching the Wizard of Oz and seeing Judy Garland. I remember hearing that this was the first film in colour and, because it was the first, the colours were so bright and vivid. It sounds really weird, but watching that film, I was entranced. I didn’t know what acting was, I didn’t know how to act, but I was definitely very interested in what was in front of me and I wanted to be involved."

She further revealed that her first acting gig was at the age of 10 for the TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

The makers are yet to reveal more details about the latest Alice in Wonderland project.
