Amanda Seyfried drops hints for Sophie’s future in Mamma Mia 3

By the time Mamma Mia 3 arrives, if it arrives, Sophie's life will have turned around. The jolly teenager we saw in the original 2008 film based on the ABBA musical might have grown up to become a mother, basically stepping into Meryl Streep's character's shoes. At least Amanda Seyfried hopes that.

In her latest interview with People magazine, she says,

"Oh, with kids. I mean, I love being a mother. I love playing a mother, and I would love to dive into the curiosities of motherhood and raising children on a Greek island — just like Donna did with Sophie."

This statement echoes the same sentiments the actress expressed in another recent interview with MovieWeb.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the second film in the musical franchise, released in 2018, sees Seyfried's Sophie becoming a mother at the end of the film, which already sets the stage for the story to be continued.

There's still a lot of skepticism concerning Mamma Mia 3. Judy Craymer, who produced the original musical and the films, hinted in 2020 that it is in development. However, the franchise music composer Benny Andersson again added to the skepticism and said that it is just "wishful thinking."

But Craymer reassured in one 2023 interview with Variety that Mamma Mia 3 will happen. She said,

Bjorn and Benny always take a certain amount of convincing. I don’t know how much more convincing they’re gonna have because everybody wants another film. But they had ABBA Voyage and then they wanted a rest from ABBA stuff. But it will happen.

Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are members of ABBA, who also composed the films' score.

Pierce Brosnan gave quite an update on Mamma Mia 3

One of the major actors in the film, Pierce Brosnan, who plays one of Sophie's three dads in the movie, was in an interview with Magic Radio. He said that he had a dinner with Judy where they discussed where the characters might go in the movie.

While his character, Sam Carmichael, will, without a doubt, be there, he is most likely to be accompanied by two more major characters, Harry Bright (Colin Firth) and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård), the other two dads of Sophie. All of them agreed that they don’t want to know who Sophie’s biological father is and decided to be there for her equally.

Now that also means that these three will have to take care of Sophie’s child, Donny, whom she gives birth to at the end of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

What are the first two films about?

The first movie was more focused on Sophie's mother, Donna Sheridan, played by Meryl Streep. It introduced her to three former lovers, one of whom Sophie believes is her biological father.

In the sequel, the film puts Sophie at the center of the story, as Donna has passed away. However, we still see Streep's character in a couple of flashback sequences.

Both films were a commercial success, garnering over a billion dollars at the global box office. Mamma Mia 3 is likely to add more strength to that number, whenever it happens.
