Andy Serkis, the man who gave us Gollum’s unforgettable “preciousss,” is officially stepping behind the lens and slipping back into the slimy skin of Sméagol for the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. After years of whispers and waiting, Serkis has offered a hopeful and oddly wholesome update that suggests this long-gestating project is finally on track and shaping up to be something surprising, emotional, and deeply rooted in Tolkien’s world.
Speaking to Collider about the project, the actor gave a few updates as he said,
“We're very early on in the process. We've been talking about the film over the course of the last year. We’re about to start a period of prep in the next few months or so. We will be shooting in the early to mid-part of next year, I guess, and then it'll be as long as it takes to shoot, which — it's a sizable movie — all ready for a December 2027 release.”
He then continued with a few lines of excitement about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, as he added,
"I'm incredibly excited to go back and work with my friends and family in New Zealand and actually do something which is, I think, going to be surprising, and yet very much part of the lore and the feel of the trilogy. The sensibility of it will feel, I think, close to that, and yet we're investigating in greater depth the character formerly known as Smeagol, but mostly known as Gollum.”
More details about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
With Peter Jackson and the OG dream team back in the mix as producers and a release date locked for December 17, 2027, it looks like The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum isn’t just another franchise cash grab. It’s a passion project crawling with potential, and yes, probably a lot of cave scenes, riddles, and raw fish.
Set between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the film follows Aragorn’s quiet mission to capture Gollum before he spills ring-related information to the wrong people. This is the part of Tolkien’s lore we’ve barely glimpsed on screen, one soaked in secrecy, danger, and a whole lot of internal screaming.
Serkis isn’t flying solo. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are producing, with Walsh co-writing alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. The script is in progress, prep starts later this year, and filming is expected in 2026.
So yes, there may be orcs and caves, but this is Gollum’s story now. And if the creative team pulls it off, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum might just be the most haunting, heartfelt chapter in Middle-earth yet.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected to be released in 2027.
