Are all 8 original Happy Gilmore cast members coming back for the sequel?

Happy Gilmore is back with its sequel, and it's arriving next month on July 25, 2025.

The 1996 iconic sports comedy movie is embedded in many of our childhood memories, so a sequel to this film is much-anticipated as well as a sweet delight of nostalgia. However, the sequel is incomplete without the OG cast members of the '90s film. So are we going to see them in the 2025 film?

Well, we have good news! A total of 8 original cast members will be seen in the upcoming sequel. The actors include Adam Sandler, who will be back as Happy Gilmore. Along with him, we have Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, Dennis Dugan, Kevin Nealon, Lee Trevino, and Verne Luidquist returning in the much-anticipated sequel!

This installment is helmed by Kyle Newacheck, who has previously directed Game Over, Man! (2018) and Murder Mystery (2019). The plot of the film is set after a span of thirty years and will follow golfer Happy Gilmore, who is now older and is finding ways to support his daughter in her dreams of going to a ballet academy.

The OG Happy Gilmore cast is back in its upcoming sequel!

1) Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore

Adam Sandler is back as the main protagonist. Happy Gilmore is a former golf player who is now striving to be back in the game to fulfill his duties as a father to his daughter and to support her dreams.

Interestingly, in this film, Sandler's family is also cast in the film, including his wife Jackie and their daughters Sunny and Sadie. So it is evident that this franchise is extremely close to the actor, as Sandler has again joined hands with Tim Herlihy from the OG film in collaboration with the writing of the film.

2) Ben Stiller as Hal L.

Who can forget the iconic look of Ben Stiller in the original film? This time, too, the Meet the Parents star is back in this appearance as Hal L. in the Happy Gilmore sequel. Hal L. is a systematic and authoritarian man in the '90s film who was in charge of a retirement home where Gilmore's grandmother used to live.

In the trailer for its sequel, Stiller as Hal is seen delivering a sharp, intimidating line to Gilmore, as Hal utters:

"Check out the name tag, grandson. You're in my world now."

3) Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit

Julie Bowen returns in the role of Virginia in the sequel. It will be a delight to see the unwavering love between the couple. In the original film, Virginia is a supportive figure in Gilmore's sports career. This time, the couple, who are now parents, are once again navigating Gilmore's journey in the game as well as their children's aspirations.

4) Dennis Dugan as Doug Thompson

The director of the original film, Dennis Dugan, also acted in the film as Doug Thompson. However, the sequel will not be helmed by him, but he is returning to his acting role in it. Serving as the director of the pro golf tour, Doug initially sides with Gilmore's rival, Shooter McGavin, in the original film. However, with time, as Gilmore's name gets established, Doug begins to change sides.

5) Verne Lundquist as himself

The veteran sportscaster Verne Lundquist will also appear in the sequel as himself. He was the announcer in the previous film, and too, is also seen doing the same in the trailer. A spectator of the game and Gilmore's golfing skills, it will be compelling to witness Lundquist revisit Happy's journey after 30 years in the film.

6) Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin

The arch rival of Happy, golfer Shooter McCavin, will be yet again essayed by actor Christopher McDonald. In the original film, these two were at loggerheads. But 30 years down the line, it evokes curiosity to witness their dynamics changing over the years. Or will it remain the same? Only the upcoming sequel can answer that!

7) Kevin Nealon as Gary Potter

The wholesome character of Kevin Nealon as Gary Potter in the OG film shall again be gracing our screens this time as well. Gary is also a golfer like Happy, and while Happy is dealing with issues with regard to his temperament, Gary Potter is such an optimistic force to reckon with, as he provides support to Happy in his career.

8) Lee Trevino as himself

One of the most iconic figures in golf history, the legendary sportsman Lee Trevino, will also appear in the sequel. Throughout the original film, Trevino's reactions to Happy's awkward actions are priceless! It brings a sense of authenticity to witnessing real-life sportspeople cast in a sports film, where the lines between reality and imagination get blurred. Such is the moment when we watch Lee Trevino in the original film.
