Delays over delays—that is what has been happening with James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash. The first film was released in 2009 and the sequel 13 years thereafter, both of them collectively bringing in over $5 billion globally; this effectively makes this a mega franchise, and there are likely to be lots of sequels in the future.

For now, if no more delays for part three are announced, we will be seeing the film by the end of 2025. The last delay couldn't have happened, but it stemmed from the WGA strike, which affected a range of films back then.

Now that it's sorted, and the Way of Water sequel is preparing to see the light of day with actors including Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and more reprising their roles. Harry Potter fame David Thewlis and Game of Thrones' Oona are said to be a part of the film too.

Avatar: Fire and Ash release details

The current date for the film's release is set for December 19, 2025. Jon Landau, the film's producer, said 95% of the filming is done already; this was a couple of years ago. Given this, Avatar: Ash and Water should be very well into the post-production.

It was speculated that Avatar: Fire and Ash's first cut was 9 hours long, which could've been the reason for the delays given the cuts and editing. However, it was later revealed that it was the combined runtime for Avatar 3, 4, and 5.

All in all, the movie has been subject to nine delays since it was first announced. Technically, people knew that there would be a part three, as Cameron said in a 2010 interview with MTV that he has a story that'll be a great fit for a trilogy.

What Avatar: Fire and Ash story will be about

For one, it will be about the Ash people residing within Pandora only. However, the title itself says a lot about it, as James Cameron explains,

"If you think of fire as hatred, anger, violence, that sort of thing, and ash is the aftermath. So what's the aftermath? Grief, loss, right? And then what does that cause in the future? More violence, more anger, more hatred. It's a vicious cycle. So that's the thinking."

We already have the Na'avi people in Avatar: Fire and Ash, as one good side so Ash people will appear as the enemies of the tribe. This also indicates that viewers are likely to see different regions of Pandora. Given that it will be about a couple of tribes, we may get to see a battle but not a war.

Cast of Avatar: Fire and Ash

Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, CCH Pounder, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang will all be returning in Avatar: Fire and Ash. While new joiners include David Thewlis and Oona Chaplin, who will play Peylak and Varang, respectively.

Other cast members in the film include:

  • Giovanni Ribisi - Parker Selfridge
  • Cliff Curtis - Tonowari
  • Edie Falco - General Frances Ardmore
  • Brendan Cowell - Captain Mick Scoresby
  • Matt Gerald - Corporal Lyle Wainfleet
  • Jack Champion - Miles "Spider" Socorro
  • Jemaine Clement - Dr. Ian Garvin

The Avatar franchise has a vast universe, which is likely to unfold with every new film on the list. While it is not confirmed, rumors have it that this saga could expand up to 7 films.
