To Marvel fans' delight, Avengers: Doomsday was first announced on July 28, 2024. The film is going to be the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. Anthony and Joe Russo, more popularly known as the Russo Brothers, are the directors behind Avengers: Doomsday. The film will follow a team of the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and the original X-Men as they face Doctor Doom.

The film's cast was revealed in March 2025, along with the update that it is in production. But now, on September 9, 2025, the Russo Brothers have posted a cryptic image without any further explanation. It was accompanied by only a caption that said,

#DoomsdayIsComing

The Russo Brothers' cryptic message about Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2025, and is currently in production. There is quite the speculation around the film because Dr. Doom, who is the antagonist of the upcoming film, will be played by Robert Downey Jr., who also famously played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Avengers films till Avengers: Endgame (2019).

After Iron Man's death in Avengers: Endgame, fans have been eagerly waiting to see the franchise bring back the character through some loophole. While that is next to impossible, Marvel is bringing back Downey to play another popular character from the comics. This time, Robert Downey Jr. is coming back to his Marvel fans as a villain.

Given that the members of the Avengers and New Avengers are all going to face Dr. Doom in the upcoming film, there has been some speculation already. People are wondering if they'd be surprised to see Dr. Doom look exactly like Tony Stark, or if Marvel will choose to ignore the physical similarities of the two characters. Since most of the Avengers are going to be in Avengers: Doomsday, fans are hoping Chris Evans will make a surprise entry as Steve Rogers/Captain America, even though he hasn't been announced to be part of the cast.

To add to these and many more speculations, the Russo Brothers have posted a cryptic image with a caption that doesn't really say much. It just says that Doomsday is coming, which in literal terms could mean that the film is coming. Or it could also mean that a potential teaser image or clip will be released soon.

The image, while it is cryptic, seems to be a very zoomed-in image of a scene from Avengers: Doomsday. Or it could also be a zoomed-in picture from a teaser or a trailer. Nothing has been confirmed by the creators, and all we or the fans can do is speculate. However, it is unlikely that the film's trailer will be revealed more than a year before the film's release. Thus, it can be an extremely zoomed-in picture of a scene of the film, or post-credits, or even any important information that the film will give us.

Avengers: Doomsday will star many actors who will be reprising their respective Marvel roles, including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Vanessa Kirby, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
