Avengers: Doomsday is currently filming in the UK, and as that happens fans are waiting for further casting announcements, beyond what was teased in March 2025. One of the surprises from the first Doomsday casting announcement was the surprising lack of names like Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Mark Ruffalo, Elizabeth Olsen, and Chris Evans.

Several people were expecting Tom Holland, Elizabeth Olsen, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Brie Larson to be announced as a part of the film's cast. Ruffalo and Evans' involvement is something that a lot of people are hoping for, because the two actors played their respective characters since the very inception of Earth's mightiest heroes in 2012's The Avengers.

As Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU in a different role, fans hope he can convince both Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo to return to the MCU.

It was Robert Downey Jr. who convinced Chris Evans and Mark Rufallo to join the MCU and the Avengers

In a September 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, Chris Evans revealed that he was initially hesitant to sign the contract to play Captain America in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. Evans at the time had already had a stint in the Marvel Universe, having appeared as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch in 20th Century Fox's two Fantastic Four movies directed by Tim Story.

The two Fantastic Four movies were not well-received, but Evans and Michael Chiklis were touted as the best parts of these movies. This experience might have colored Evans' views of the Marvel movies despite the two productions being separate. The actor described his initial feelings thus, in the interview:

"This is it. I just signed my death warrant; my life's over. I can't believe I did this. This isn't the career I wanted. The biggest thing I was worried about was making sh**ty f***ing movies. I don't want to make sh**ty movies and be contractually obligated to make garbage."

However, it was a conversation with his Avengers co-star Robert Downey Jr. that made Evans look at his Marvel role differently. The Steve Rogers/Captain America actor was not the only MCU actor whom Downey Jr. convinced. If you are a huge fan of Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk, thank the Iron Man/Tony Stark/Victor Von Doom actor for that, too.

Ruffalo made his debut in 2012's The Avengers as Banner/Hulk, as a continuation of 2008's The Incredible Hulk, replacing Edward Norton. Hulk actor Ruffalo appeared in a Jimmy Fallon interview in May 2020, where he revealed that he initially did not want to commit to the character for multiple years, and it was his Zodiac co-star Robert Downey Jr. who talked him into it:

"I was scared. I didn't know what I could add to what I'd already thought had been done so well before me... and I'd only been doing indie movies until that point, so I was like 'I don't know if I'm the right person for this.'... It must have made it to him that I was... hemming and hawing, and he just simply said, 'Ruffalo, let's go. We got this.' In true Iron Man fashion. And then after that, I was like, I guess I have to do it."

It is important to remember that Bruce Banner is still active in the MCU. That's why people want to know his status in Avengers: Doomsday, as he is one of the strongest MCU characters. Moreover, rumors are circulating on the internet that Mark Ruffalo might be a co-lead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Therefore, many believe that Mark Ruffalo's role in the next two Avengers movies might be inevitable.

That leaves us with Chris Evans.

Chris Evans did express hope to return as Captain America recently

It is imperative to say that Evans looks back at his MCU tenure with more affection than his previous Marvel tenure at 20th Century Fox. In fact, Evans revealed that he felt left out of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in an interview with ScreenRant to promote his Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson co-starrer, Materialists. While he might be telling the truth, it must be noted that Evans returned as the Human Torch in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine.

Thus, it could mean that Evans might be keeping his role a secret only to surprise the viewers in the cinema hall. This is a strategy that was followed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
